Librarian, wife, mom, geek. She/her. Executive function for at least 4 people at all times. Trying to be better than I was yesterday.

and gives it form. I love these parents and would gladly join them for more horrific adventures, but sadly this seems to be the only volume. I don’t know that it would hit quite the same if you haven’t survived the toddler years, but I think it would still slap. 🧵

Every once in a while, I forget that I’m really not a horror fan. I really don’t remember why I put this on hold, but I find myself quickly drawn in by this misfit band of parents who are all too heart-wrenchingly familiar. Being a parent not for the faint of heart and Nick Roche captures that fear🧵

So many middle books of trilogies feel like just that: middles. This one tied up just enough to leave me feeling a sense of closure while still hinting at many greater mysteries yet to come. Definitely read Shades of Grey first, but know you won’t feel cheated if the third book never comes out.

The second book in Jasper Fforde’s Shades of Grey picks up right after the first. Having surrendered to the lack of knowledge about the apocalypse that lead to this odd incarnation of planet earth, I enjoyed the journey as well as the feeling of knowing slightly more than the characters 🧵

Dense and hard to get into—don’t try to understand what is going on, just be swept along until you are unable to put it down. Clever and imaginative, this tantalizing post-apocalyptic mystery is littered with Easter eggs and vocabulary that will lead you down many delightful rabbit-holes.

Checked out this book by @tkingfisher.bsky.social from the library (❤️ Hoopla) on my phone while stuck in urgent care on Saturday evening. Dark, but…cozy? Big Terry Pratchett vibes. Highly enjoyable. Will never look at Gingerbread Men the same. Heartily recommend!

Teenagers diagnosed with autism same day my FIL fell in my garage suffering a TBI. FIL in for brain surgery for a subdural hematoma one day followed the very next day by my teenager in surgery to have a (thankfully not) cancerous tumor removed. 2023 was a ride. Zero Stars. Do not recommend.

Once again. Louder, for the people in the Senate and the House and even (especially) the White House.

Fresh spinach, cubes of cheddar cheese, and either hard-boiled eggs or cannellini beans. Tajín seasoning to taste. Super quick, filling, and tasty.

Evicted by Matthew Desmond, along with his 2023 book: Poverty by America, should be required reading. If you are a person who hasn’t lived through an eviction, this book will forever change your understanding of what it is like to be poor in America.

A dark Lemony Snickett meets Knives Out. Entertaining fourth-wall breaking that lightened up an otherwise rather dark story. Highly amusing in a “should I be enjoying this?” sort of way.

I have simultaneously wanted to read this book and avoided it forever. I do not know why I avoided it for so long. I fell in love with the characters and places. I read the entire book in a single day. I am certain I will read this one again in the future!

January reading roundup. Part architectural study, part civics lesson, part abolitionist text. This is a fascinating look at not just Rikers Island but also pre-sentencing incarceration and the nature of how physical spaces shape intention and vice versa.

Me: “Vendor, don’t change the thing.” Narrator: “The vendor changed the thing.” Rinse. Repeat. I like my job, but some days it feels like an absurdist play with no intermission.

Community is everything. I’m an introvert so reaching out is never my first instinct. Send the text. Make the call. Say YES! to the invite. We are not meant to go it alone.

Had some time to fill before coffee. Stopped at my local branch library for work reasons. Ran into a friend from library school that I haven’t seen in a very long time. Knew she was working in the system as a sub, but we hadn’t crossed paths yet. Serendipitous socializing for the win!

Did something I haven’t done in probably two decades: called a friend and asked what they were doing right now and did they want to get coffee. They were out with a mutual friend and so in an hour, the three of us are meeting for coffee. Spontaneous socializing for the win.

Do you know who is on your school board? Your local library board? These are the real people direction the political dialogue in this country. Pay attention to what they say.

We spend so much time focused on national politics and feeling disenfranchised, but the things that actively impact us happen at the local level (school boards, city & county govt). These elections are often overlooked and can be swayed by a small number of focused voters.
