I don't trust authors who don't do this. If your argument requires that I be surprised to work, it doesn't. If your writing requires that I be baited into reading it, it's not good yet.

one of the most dishonest things people in my profession do is pretend as if “the story” and “the narrative” isn’t something they have direct control over

Exist. We exist in the America that they think belongs only to them. Us brown people keep crossing the border. LGBTQ+ people aren’t in the closet anymore. Women expect equality. In their minds, this cannot stand. Nature and God put them in charge. And equality for the rest of us is an attack.

That’s horrible! And it’s in the unsealed Epstein materials? Could you mention where you saw it? I’d like to follow up and read it myself. Thanks.

I used to read Z magazine, too! I hardly hear it mentioned these days. Glad to find a kindred spirit.

it seems to me that in the 1990s or early 2000s a revelation that a presidential candidate casually threw the n word around to describe Black people would mark the end of their campaign.

Damn! That was an amazing review by Burnyeat. Thank you for drawing attention to it. Thanks to Burnyeat, I think I finally understand what Strauss was up to and why there is a persistent love of him exhibited by a number of American conservatives. For years, I felt like I was missing something.

You’re quite right. It’s a Christmas-themed item for Aldi, only available around the holidays. I *love*them so I always snap them up when available.

Why does science give us all this shit that nobody asked for? Literally nobody asked for self-driving cars, AI college essays, or evil robot police dogs. We're all living with chronic disease on mountains of garbage as the world burns and science is like here we've made more things to ruin your life

i have no actual proof for this but i often feel that elite disdain for studying the humanity is much more about reducing job competition for their own children than it is about anything else

All the "solutions" proposed in this involve more unpaid work from faculty to manage our own feelings about being overstretched. I don't want a training, a coffee group, or a paid external speaker about about compassion fatigue. I want higher pay, admin support, & actual vacation time.

I know how you feel. I was in the same situation—minus the tornadoes. I got in trouble with the admin for telling students to stay home and thereby protect themselves from exposure.

this gets to something i have been thinking about, how the “history and tradition” standard is not just exclusive — only some histories and some traditions count — but actively anti-democratic. it seeks to smother the present with the dead hand of a (narrow and constructed) past

borrowing @nathankhensley.bsky.social's phrase, it's time to regard all de-funding of programs in the humanities, and the undermining of livelihoods teaching in these fields, as a form of theft: theft from students, certainly, but also theft from us all. A kind of civilizational self-looting.

There is a thesis to be written about how comic books created and perpetuated reservoirs of Nazi references long after WW2 to maintain it as part of the zeitgeist
