NZAS recommends submissions consider and describe what process will be required for successful reform. We propose that the SSAG will need to be followed by a Royal Commission to address the nation's challenges after three decades of circular policies on science and wider R&D.

The new Science System Advisory Group (SSAG) faces a scope as broad as previous failed reforms, yet draws on narrower skills to aim at a slim target with no $$ on the table. The SSAG's questions for submitters create paradox that submitters must consider. bit.ly/4a2sJeK

Another rapid period of change is coming to research in New Zealand. Will it help or worsen the crisis brewing in the universities and across our research funding? Our Co-Presidents have a message for the research community and the nation. youtu.be/AhUtAxLLaw8?...

I've done lots of media on the end of the major and much needed research sector reform known as Te Ara Paerangi Future Pathways. One of the more interesting was probably this piece on Waatea News - I felt privileged to get this slot and these questions. waateanews.com/2024/02/20/p...

There have been no formal announcements about what is likely to be a silent end to New Zealand's most significant attempt at reforming the research system in decades. As I say in here, large cuts to important research capacity appear to be well on their way. www.science.org/content/arti...

“No one believes the system is fit for purpose and sustainable"

Travis Glare, DVCR at Lincoln Uni says of fellow scientists, noting we keep trying anyway.

Are we at the crisis point where people need to care about how science works and is funded in NZ?

The hearing for Wiles v UoA finishes today. I was in court for about half of it. The UoA was unable to produce written evidence to back up most of its claims re: health & safety. Emails from staff raising concerns went unanswered. Straightforward mitigations inexplicably took years to put in place.

Get folks out to see this film! The issues aren’t going away and we (especially people who’ve moved here online) need to be prepared to talk about solutions. Plan an outing and discussion - and post thoughts!
