Worrying and likely true, but my feed there actually feels safe-ish again finally and the cartoons about the Supreme Court are killer good.

Haven't talked about it much here but I'm really proud that the Save Science Coalition now has twenty-three member organisations who are standing up for a properly funded public science sector. Do you belong to an organisation that might want to join? Let me know! scientists.org.nz/save-science...

The NZAS submission to SSAG is now available. How can we bolster hope the latest effort produce better results than other reforms in recent decades?

NZAS recommends submissions consider and describe what process will be required for successful reform. We propose that the SSAG will need to be followed by a Royal Commission to address the nation's challenges after three decades of circular policies on science and wider R&D.

The new Science System Advisory Group (SSAG) faces a scope as broad as previous failed reforms, yet draws on narrower skills to aim at a slim target with no $$ on the table. The SSAG's questions for submitters create paradox that submitters must consider. bit.ly/4a2sJeK

We've been doing this science system reform gig since practically before I was born - time to consider something different, maybe?

Chris Bishop has an op ed in the Herald. He doesn’t mention coal, mining, or that plenty of renewable energy has been consented but not built. Or that the expert panel process is weak and subject to bias.

So, is this gaslighting?

I just did my GST return. It has been a grim six months, work-wise, and the forecast isn't sunny. Wherever you are in the world, if you need a very experienced science writer, physicist, comms consultant, trainer, mentor, event speaker, or talking head / broadcaster, please hit me up 👩‍🔬🧪📚💬

More on the swing back to coal. 95bFM called so I hopped on their podcast. Normally I’m an environmental scientist with fairly measured comments, but I rolled out my dismay in no uncertain terms. #gaslighting 95bfm.com/bcast/govern...

Important thing it seems people don't know. If you make a submission to a select committee a) the upload page asks for your contact details and b) the full text of your substantive submission may be published so you *shouldn't put your phone number/email/address in your submission*. Not safe.

Apparently Carbon News heard it too. RNZ put it to Chris Hipkins on air. What he said was fine, but I was disappointed in the lack of laughter. I'll already miss James Shaw's ability to have a media-worthy guffaw of laughter.

I just woke up to hear on RNZ that Shane Jones is telling the press that increasing New Zealand’s coal mining will help pay for our climate mitigation?

A trading nation seeking high-value markets will want to seriously reduce emissions. This will come as a disappointment to NZ farmers – any reasonable review may find more rationale to strengthen methane targets than weaken them. 2/2

We have taken to say science a big more since the change from RSI to SI&T. By that, we mean for the use to be interchangeable if this is the names we have to work with.

Another rapid period of change is coming to research in New Zealand. Will it help or worsen the crisis brewing in the universities and across our research funding? Our Co-Presidents have a message for the research community and the nation. youtu.be/AhUtAxLLaw8?...

But that process might be clearer and better in 1-2 year increments? Not that many units can do that at once, and those that do can’t normally keep doing it?

And doing it every 6-8 years is silly unless this is the time needed to see some progress. Originally it was sensible; now needs a completely different approach.
