One would hope so! It's a nasty little trick actually - re-purpose existing funding, give it a new name, declare the newly-named project is a time-limited exercise, and then let it expire without ever 'cutting' funding. Wonder if it's happened in other sectors...

Ōtautahi, if anyone sees one of these, a Magnum Metro S, with one brown tyre and one black one, missing a battery, either on the street or for sale, will you please let me know? Someone broke into our back gate to take it.

Cannot emphasise enough how much I would like to spend my days doing, y'know, science instead of Cassandra-ing the decline and fall of our science system, but such is 2024 I guess

Anyway the fact of the matter is that austerity has consequences, and the consequences for the science system are bad already, but can still avoid being disastrous if action is taken.

The one point I will clarify from this otherwise very good article is that while the National Science Challenges were always time-limited, their funding was pulled from *existing* science funding. That's practically a whole Marsden Fund gone, relative to 2014.

IMO many fewer objectively bad books in the world than books that don’t work for everybody.

Apropos of libraries, I finally visited the Te Awe CBD site this week due to needing to hang around town between meetings and it's great and was PACKED. Can't wait for the main library to re-open but the council really have done a fantastic job with the temporary ones.

Wellington did this during COVID and it has meant I now mostly read library books, because I can reserve them & have them sent to my local library for free. Magic.

There's a really interesting story for someone to write about how NZ cuisine has adopted a number of otherwise somewhat globally obscure South American food plants. The recent book on feijoas obviously does a deep-dive on them but there's a wider story there

I simply cannot imagine a level of 'preparation' for kids seeing semi-naked people at the pools (a place where it is entirely socially acceptable to be semi-naked) that takes more than like. three sentences.

I also hate the level of DARVO going on in this story - *she* is actively advocating for harassment of other women but it's framed around *her* fears that people will call out her harassment!

Having sudden gloomy thoughts about how much the current NZ economic situation mirrors the 1987 sharemarket crash and aftermath (notable to me, although I am too young to remember it, because I am also at a very similar life stage to my parents at the time)

Yeah, some people are being made genuinely poor (no longer have enough to meet expenses) and some people are just having to think systematically about what they spend for the first time (which still sucks but isn't a crisis per se).

(Also, this is why a lot of middle-class people think that budgeting is a solution to poverty, because it IS a path to financial stability for THEM.)

I think the issue is that people who are or have been actually poor know this because they have to. People who DO make enough to live on, and always have, can get by never having to learn this because everything just sort of works out. Credit cards probably a contributing factor.

Yikes, not just a case of not bothering to think twice, but a case of a company ignoring very specific guidance put out by their industry association on why you shouldn't do the thing they did. And from a company using a Māori name too!
