This is literally the same shit the Nazis did before industrializing murder. They would get soldiers to just shoot people into pits. They sent Jews en masse via train to camps to starve and die. It was disgusting in the 40s and it's disgusting now.

Being really annoying is praxis. Phone, email, fax, show up in person if that’s an option. Just don’t let up until you’re too irritating to ignore.

Reef sharks and garter snakes Lacking in clarity: Do they lay eggs, or do they give live birth? Scientists call it o- voviviparity! (Say it aloud, an occasion of mirth!)

Hi to this pregnant garter snake! Garter snakes are ovoviviparous, which is a word I have long felt deserves to be the third or seventh line in a double-dactyl

Aspects of placental functioning are influenced by paternal DNA, and small amounts of maternal DNA can get through the placental barrier, but the placenta itself is formed from embryogenetic cells (ie baby’s DNA) that split off very early on from the cells that form the blastocyst

The argument of fetal personhood is super common and for sure impactful and unfortunately (for the forced birthers) it has absolutely no bearing on the fact that it is simply not acceptable to force anyone to use their body for something they don’t want to use their body for

The reason abortion is important is because people should get to decide what they want to use their bodies for, not because of some vague & inaccurate idea of the gestating person and their embryo being one singular organism

Obv talking about “my placenta” colloquially is completely normal, I did it too — what bugs me is, I guess, the lack of knowledge about what the placenta actually is, and its gestational role vis a vis the various bodies involved

A lot of people don’t! It’s both a poorly understood organism AND the (well-understood) science of human gestation is poorly communicated

When you eat “your” placenta you’re not eating your placenta you’re eating your baby’s placenta — it’s not autocannibalism, it’s just plain old ordinary cannibalism

A thing I get irrationally annoyed by is when people talk about the placenta as the parent’s organ. It’s not your organ! It’s the fetus’s organ! It develops in the embryonic sac! It has the fetus’s blood type! It has both maternal & paternal dna!

Somehow the baby has confused “bat’riq” (Arabic for penguin) with “bless you”—but she also knows that “saha” is what you say in Arabic when a person sneezes. So, logically, she’s deduced that the English post-sneeze salutation is to heartily say “penguin!”

Also every native Arabic speaker i know pronounces the variety of A’s in a totally different order from everyone else, and sometimes they put one or two of them before the L, and basically I just make a bunch of sounds and hope people know I don’t mean fork (shoka)

The word for “spoon” in Arabic is “mil3aqa” — the 3 is an ayin (a sort of swallowed-A vowel that English doesnt have) and the q is a half-silent glottal stop, so it’s basically mil-a-a-a but every A is pronounced sliiiightly differently
