Beautiful show at the MAC, contemporary Quebecoise women artists, responding to the environment, landscape, climate change, mostly video and sculpture. The breathing beach stones in asinnajaq's "rock piece" made me cry #envhum

Well, looks like I'll post here more often. It may be blue, but at least it doesn't seem sad like the other X place.

Here's my Morning File from Thursday. I got to hang out with Stephen Archibald to notice what he notices in the city.

Shared traditional Maritime brown bread with my Atlantic World history class as we considered the past and ongoing connections of Caribbean enslavement and the culture of Nova Scotia. Various recipes for this molasses yeast bread are staples of Atlantic Canadian kitchens, unknown outside the region

Snow receding, plump red over-wintered wintergreen berries (Gaultheria procumbens) pop against bright green mosses, while last year's leathery mayflower leaves (Epigaea repens) prepare for new blooms. Spring is coming! I'll return to posting #wildflowers here on Bsky; I hope you'll share yours too!

Many thanks to @stillots1.bsky.social for speaking to my Atlantic World class about her article "Importing the Plantation." Her talk was full of wonderful reminders to read widely, stay curious, acknowledge the work of others, and "be a little sleuthy" to build context and gain fluency in the past.

No photos from the Sussex coast tonight, sadly. We're covered in sea fog. I do love listening to the foghorn from Newhaven lighthouse even though in the past ship's crews knew it signified danger. *Photo of Sennen Cove, Cornwall, in the fog many years ago, not Sussex!

I loved this novel, so closely tied to the ecology and #envhist of the Northeast: centuries of forest succession, clearing and regrowth, chestnuts and elms, blights and storms; the serendipity of apple cultivars; wild mushrooms and mosses and spring ephemerals. I know the deep magic of these woods 💚

The local beaver has been busy since the snowstorm last week. Seems they have moved on from alders and young maples to mature birches 🦫♥️
