This is the kind of breakdown of Project 2025 we need more of—@jesspish.bsky.social is the leading expert on sheriffs and their myths, and was able to put a lot of history and context to work despite what little detail "Mandate" offered on sheriffs.

Was this related to their wanting to restrict repro/sexual health along strict sex-as-assigned-at-birth lines? But it's a confusing mess because they insist on identifying people only by their sex-assigned-at-birth? In other words, are the condom bans to express anti-trans political aims?

(It's not any better, but I think they'd try to get the librarians and the teachers and the booksellers and others who get the work out into the world to pull our work, first.) (Sorry I do not want to fearmonger, but yeah, it's bad.)

Here's exactly why this matters: the GOP knows that the country is quickly becoming more diverse. Democracy -- allowing more people to vote -- means that they are out of office. Being anti-democracy is a fancy way of saying you would like the return of John C. Calhoun.

Their whole "Section 230 is a tool to suppress conservatives online" discourse/conspiracy theory really threw a wrench in their anti-porn talk (or their typical embrace of big business but not big tech)

I've been marking the whole doc up since Feb, and decided the best way to attack this was on the conceptual level, since tbh while a lot of their policy proposals are unworkable (remove "gender" from all federal programs and laws????) what is behind them remains tangible and destructive

Also, in the FCC section, there's a bit on revamping Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which, again, doesn't mention porn, but that's part of what motivates those changes (as well as the anti-gender/anti-"sexualization" stuff that you also around current lege they support like KOSA)

The anti-gender/anti-sexualization rhetoric is all over the HHS and DOE sections, but if you search on "porn" you won't find much of that. Arguably, their demand to re-enforce Comstock would implicate porn, too, but they don't say "porn" (or even "Comstock," you have to search on the statute, 1461)

For what it's worth, I did note in my first story on Project 2025 that it was an update on the first "Mandate" document meant for Reagan, that it's target was the administrative state, and that the power behind it was not merely a document but the staffing plan... newrepublic.com/article/1788...

See also all of the online obscenity bills over the past couple of years, including KOSA, 13 of which were made into laws this year. & the anti-drag bills - which have been incorporated into the DOD's and State Dept's budget bills for 2025, which have passed the House and await Senate attention now.

Even with all the attention now on Project 2025, their fearmongering about pornography has been overlooked. But there it is, on the document’s first page, one item in a litany of signs of the destruction of American values. And that's a sign of how broad their fight on "porn" could be:

Seven times between 1801 and 1869 Congress changed the size of the court, going from a low of five justices in 1801 to a high of ten in 1863. In most of those cases, as in 1801 and 1863, the size went up and down in order to fix an imbalance or overreach by the Supreme Court. My latest

I don’t think “but can they do that?” is the most informed question to guide Project 2025 analysis, not without “what do they mean by that?” and “are they already working on that?” and “who are their allies on that?”

Project 2025 includes the call to “outlaw” porn. If you want to understand what they mean by that? Look to what these groups are already fighting “porn,” and their connections to anti-gender movements outside the US. I start that analysis here:

The (relative) confidence that this document is too incoherent and self-contradictory to be implemented… well, I’ll be interested to see if that holds when/if this series reaches the HHS, DOE, and DOJ chapters, or anything else touching on gender and sexuality
