I found Amanda Root enormously sympathetic as Anne, too. Her quiet despair was so convincing that every (rare) warm smile was like a sudden wash of sunlight.

I really enjoyed Emma when it came out. A very different beast, of course, but huge fun. Does your list exclude TV series adaptations? (*koff* Pride & Prejudice *koff* - which came out the same year as both of those! Clearly 1995 was THE year for Austen on film)

Over the weekend, I watched two Jane Austen adaptations, both made in 1995: Persuasion (dir. Roger Michell) & Sense & Sensibility (dir. Ang Lee) & I liked them both very much. Persuasion had a quiet, slow naturalism that I especially enjoyed.
