I found Amanda Root enormously sympathetic as Anne, too. Her quiet despair was so convincing that every (rare) warm smile was like a sudden wash of sunlight.

I really enjoyed Emma when it came out. A very different beast, of course, but huge fun. Does your list exclude TV series adaptations? (*koff* Pride & Prejudice *koff* - which came out the same year as both of those! Clearly 1995 was THE year for Austen on film)

Over the weekend, I watched two Jane Austen adaptations, both made in 1995: Persuasion (dir. Roger Michell) & Sense & Sensibility (dir. Ang Lee) & I liked them both very much. Persuasion had a quiet, slow naturalism that I especially enjoyed.

Honestly, this has to be the most immature destructive NZ govt in... well, at least 30 years? possibly 40? maybe longer? Historically bad across the board.

Hey, current NZ govt - contrary to what you seem to think, there's no rule that says our politics have to be as godawful shitty as the UK and US. Enough with this try-hard MAGA wannabe crap. Grow up, etc etc.

Let's drop the pretence that Act is a libertarian party. Their leader's stated desire to silence and punish critics reveals his authoritarian leanings.

Under the Education and Training Act 2020 NZ universities are required to act as 'a critic and conscience of society'. A senior government minister publicly announcing plans for retribution against an academic because they don't like the opinions expressed by them is deeply troubling and sinister.
