Here's the latest variant picture for FLuQE variants.

Following a Nextclade update, I am grouping all the JN.1.* child lineages featuring the Spike Q493E mutation into a new "Lineage L2" group: JN.1.* +FLuQE. For now these are all the sub-lineages of KP.3.

Excellent summary of the latest work on #LongCovid from @erictopol.bsky.social showing sadly the continued detrimental impacts for those 3years on who developed this as pre vaccine. Good points re long term sequelae and continuing evolution of virus- we need effective long term vaccines!

Now, we are finding that even high-risk people face discrimination despite relying on masks as an essential measure to protect health.

Parents are legally obligated to keep their child safe.

What happens when they harm or kill a child with an infectious disease?

Why this question hasn’t been asked and laws developed is beyond me.

Why can you still #smell things wearing an effective #mask?

You can smell some nasty things like smoke and rotten eggs even with fit tested #N95 #respirators which block tiny viruses/bacteria because the smell molecules have atomic masses that are 17 million times less than a #virus. 🧪🧵1/ #COVID

It's more nuanced than that! A valved respirator provides better source control than a surgical mask (~60% reduction in viral aerosol dispersion). The same holds true for most PAPR respirators. I wish people had the same mistrust for all surgical/earloop masks as they had for valved respirators.

The valve version of the same model respirator protects the wearer as well as the valveless model, yes.

Remember that a surgical mask provides slightly worse source control than a valved N95 respirator. Surgical masks leak both inwards and outwards. If you want protection and source control, wear a valveless N95 respirator. It's fine for the uninfected household member to wear a valved N95, though.

To argue for the herd immunity strategy, they effectively claimed that as there were no RCTs (“gold standard”) to show the moon was made of mineral, it must be made of cheese. I.e. there were no RCTs showing that NPIs worked, therefore, SARS2 mass infection is safe and effective.

The very existence of a pathway that would radically slow or stop the spread of disease was an offence to the demagogues of laissez-faire. NPIs, like RPE, were thus an unnatural perversion that would cause more harm than good.

Come 2019, there was precedent for deploying RPE as an NPI against SARS, just as we had successfully deployed condoms against HIV. The problem is that it pointed towards a path of central government Keynesian intervention using public health measures to quell the looming threat.
