One of the best things (that was the worst thing at the time) was when I got pulled into a contractual lawsuit at my day job. It gave me a crash course in contract wrangling. If you don’t understand part of your contract, ask the publisher, and push back on unnecessary rights-grabby clauses.

I enjoy a well-done convention panel title where it’s Teaser: Actual Subject (“Crabs, Buses, and Trees: Convergent evolution run amok”) but after a decade of planning a con track, I’m convinced the right answer is nearly always the topic presented plainly.

I grew up 30 minutes from the IQ Zoo, a backwoods Arkansas tourist trap where chickens beat you at tic-tac-toe, parrots balanced on soccer balls, and also they trained animals for covert government missions.
