Reading recs welcome — not necessarily on Trumpism but ideology in general These Days™️. (In contemporary social science, perhaps much of this stuff is subsumed under the literature on populism…) /2

I’ve been thinking today about ideology in the post-Cold War era and, e.g., the extent to which Trumpism represents a (semi-) coherent ideology rather than an opportunistic coalition of interest groups/voting blocs. Or is that all that “ideology” is? /1

The Biden debate disaster has been a reminder of the (small-c) conservative tendencies of many Americanists in my discipline. Risk aversion is perfectly defensible, but not if you’re only going to weigh the risks of one course of action (switching nominees) and not the other (staying with Biden).

A couple reactions: 1) Biden didn’t just make a series of gaffes or seem under the weather. There were clear signs of cognitive decline. I am frankly shocked if anyone did *not* see that. 2) I don’t think it is only about electability, it is also about turnout. Gen Z, for one, has left the building.

To be clear, these are all variants of the same thing: recipes for indefinite Israeli military occupation, the continued decimation of Palestinian land, infrastructure & life, while those besieged & encircled by this regime are denied any means of self-defense, hope, or the most basic of rights. /3

Former general Israel Zvi proposes “that Palestinians who are ready to denounce Hamas could register to live in fenced-off geographic islands located next to their neighborhoods and guarded by the Israeli military. This would entitle them to reconstruction of their homes.” /2

I am glad you are optimistic about, at the very least, possible elex leading to the formation of a new govt that could sign onto the existing CF framework. And glad you are optimistic about that 30% not holding the rest of the country hostage to their agenda. Yes, ending the war is the hard part.

I wonder if removing Bibi is necessary but not sufficient. What would be a winning campaign message on how to “end the war” for a would-be PM? I.e. would a new government be able to ditch the impossible condition of destroying Hamas’s “military & governing capabilities” and survive politically?

Both scenarios assume far-right (Ben Gvir, Smotrich, settler movement) is the primary impediment to Israel accepting the broad parameters that have been put forward for a CF. Is this true? I know they’ve been the most vocal in their opposition…

There is a still-developing plan in the Biden administration to propose the establishment of a broadly defined "Palestinian Council", made up partially of PA officials but also other unnamed figures, to govern Gaza with Arab League peacekeepers led by a U.S. civil appointee. 🧵

Of course, for the present moment, it is also quite possible that being Palestinian and living through 10/7 and the ensuing war on Gaza will swamp any generational effects. The trauma will be equally felt and impactful across cohorts. /3

Mark Tessler and I found indications of generational effects in young men’s attitudes toward the PA in the wake of the First Intifada & Oslo, when resistance (temporarily) dwindled, and new Palestinian institutions were subordinated to the occupation: brill.com/view/journal... /2

Now, with the ascent of figures like Bezalel Smotrich and the Israeli government’s normalization of eliminationist, genocidal rhetoric and deeds, Israel seeks Palestinian intermediaries who are completely “denationalized”, subservient only to the Israeli regime of domination. /2
