Looking through my folder of old artworks, and I definitely went through a phase of sculptural teeth.

I leave cardboard chocolate packets lying on my desk. Inevitably, doodles start gathering on them. Mostly they look pretty shit, but every so often the layers accumulate into something that's interesting. I'm not as unhinged as this makes it appear.

Do you always mean to do it but forget? There's a bluesky setting for that!

I spent too much of this week arguing, and I think, overall, that I made an idiot of myself. (Though I mostly hold to the positions I was defending, for better or worse.)

So, my friend was doing a sponsored one mile open water swim this weekend. She is, it turns out, pregnant. Now I am doing a sponsored one mile open water swim this weekend. You know, I'm okay with my place in the friendship group being "emergency swimming substitute."

I want to interact more on here. Whether I will or not is another question. I've heard some people with social anxiety say that they find social media easier than regular socialising, but I don't seem to have the knack for either.

A thing that happens over and over when I'm editing: I'll change a boring word to something more evocative, then find that the new evocative word is already in the very next sentence. Time and time again, all my writing life.

Wishing really hard to find a home for my futuristic vampire story. It's a response to the media landscape of my adolescence, and while I know vampires still feel overexposed, I'm proud of the story.

I have a new short story out today! "Wandering Star" is a fantasy in which a refugee from a destroyed culture hears the song of a comet that might be getting too close to the planet.

It's free to read in the first issue of Baubles From Bones! 👀💙📚

Live today in the first issue of Baubles From Bones, is my story "Reminiscences on the death of Gemal the Sorcerer." I wrote this one in 2020-2021, about community, mourning, remembrance and protest. It feels more timely now than I expected.

Every so often I remember my dislike of the zombie apocalypse genre, with its bleak, misanthropic themes of isolationism and mistrust. The creepiness of walking corpses is wasted on a libertarian fantasy, where the winners of societal collapse of those who never engaged.

The term "Luddite" as a pejorative synonym for "technophobe" was a technocrat PR coup; that's not what Luddites were about. They were a labour movement fighting to give workers control over technologies which were advancing w/o oversight and rapidly automating them out of their jobs. Sound familiar?

(This thought occurring because of the story in Clarkesworld which is also a response to Omelas - I just read it and it's amazingly written. I still don't like the original for my subjective reading.)

I don’t like The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas. I don’t deny its power, or its intentions, or anyone else’s interpretation. But there was never only one child suffering for Omelas, and anyone who tells you otherwise wants to imagine injustice is easily recognizable and as easily disengaged from.

If you don't mind, what's the fail-safe recipe? I'm on a mission this year to find some nice ways of cooking tofu. (I made a couple of terrible errors early when I first became vegetarian that put me off.)

This week has been cold. I'm struggling to weld Cunifer again (not my favourite metal), and I've done more outlining and thinking about writing than actual writing. Just this evening, I found out I've worn through my bike's rear brake pads. Now I'm doodling on food packaging.

I'm cold and comfort reading Lois McMaster Bujold. Here are some cool trees I saw while visiting my family over the holidays. The world in the reflection looked fairer, and I wonder if I should have jumped in.

It sucks more because I'm stuck wondering which it is. If it's the subject, I'm sad that something hugely relevant to me isn't connecting, and if it's the writing, I'm sad I wrote this and sent it out before I had the voice to express it. (There's also luck and subjective tastes, I know.)

I'm stuck on a delayed train, and I just received a rejection for a short science-fantasy story I really love (a response to the supernatural media saturating my adolescence). It's been rejected a few times now. Either the writing or subject isn't resonating with editors - and, fair, but it stings.

Hello! New here. Hoping to meet some fellow writers of speculative fiction. I also make metal art and mend ships, for anyone who fancies chatting about that (or just generally).
