Not criticizing anyone whose been engaging in that argument, I'm just saying that it's an argument about something that comes about as close to "impossible to really know anything about" as one can get. Voters are really weird and unpredictable, especially voters who aren't super into politics.

Over the past two weeks, the people who pay a ton of attention to politics have been arguing with each other about what people who pay very little attention to politics will do in four months. Meanwhile there's almost no information that could make that conversation anything more than speculation.

The Bible passage they chose here is notable given that in 1974 Billy James Hargis (the patriarch pictured in the middle here) had been credibly accused of sexual abuse by both male and female former students.

Even without knowing the context, this would be a pretty cursed image. But in the next skeet I will provide some context to make this image even more cursed. CW: sexual abuse

In typical Trump fashion, Agenda 47 is pretty slapdash and haphazard. It’s also just a bunch of videos of him talking, not a written document. www.donaldjtrump.com/agenda47

The latest Trump campaign talking point I’m seeing is that Project 2025 is just think tank stuff unconnected to Trump, but Trump’s “Agenda 47” is the go to place for Trump’s plans. Here’s an overview of it. Gift link. wapo.st/3XYPbTw

To put this another way, almost every fascist domestic terrorist in the 1960s through the 1980s got their start in the JBS (Tom Metzger, William Luther Pierce, Robert DePugh, etc.), but they all left it because they found it to be too moderate.

The Liberty Lobby also put on a show of not being too extremist, but they were run by a neo-Nazi and their literature featured tons of not particularly dog whistled antisemitism and racism. The Liberty Lobby, IOW, had no right edge that they ever set. Whereas the JBS at least sorta kinda did.

The JBS also attracted tons of white supremacists to their organization, but made it a point to feature (a few) Black speakers and they made a public (very shallow) show of supporting Black civil rights (though not the movement that sought to secure those rights).

It's a fuzzy distinction to be sure, but here's why I make it. The JBS attracted tons of antisemites to their organization, but they also made it a point of having (a few) Jewish members and did expel folks who were too embarrassingly and publicly antisemitic.

Woke libraries are censoring "conservative" books, 1961 edition. For context, the book on the right contained at least one entirely fabricated story and was written by an arch segregationist who published racist pseudo-science in a periodical edited by a eugenicist.

Or maybe one might be wondering about the genealogy of an odd phrase like "Christ-hating Communist" that appears in the 2024 GOP platform. Well, there's a bit of relatively unknown US history that might offer some useful context.

And while I'd say the John Birch Society was more of a "far right" than "fascist" organization, the other organizations and individuals who worked with the JBS in that right wing takeover of the OR GOP in the 1960s & 1970s can accurately be labeled "fascists." sethcotlar.substack.com/p/when-did-t...

I'm currently working on a Substack post about how the Liberty Lobby and the John Birch Society were part of a far right insurgency inside the Oregon GOP in the 1960s and 1970s. They were the forces that pushed the GOP rightward, it didn't just happen naturally.

Yes, but also there's a long history of far right Americans being fascinated with cutting edge rocket and military technology. Orange County, for example, was a center for both high tech military contractors AND the John Birch Society in the 1960s. Richard Butler was an aeronautical engineer.

Encouraging “human flourishing” was this weird in-group term that nearly all of them would use describing crypto. Human flourishing also needs a livable climate.
