The thing I can't stop thinking about is this: I'm 48, and in my adult lifetime there has been one Republican who won the popular vote. But I will probably spend the rest of my life under the authority of a Supreme Court dominated by hard right conservatives. How is that democracy?

I can’t believe the Supreme Court just ruled that the president can sleep outdoors in a public space.

Holy shit, the Supreme Court actually wrote that Trump telling Pence to claim the wildly unconstitutional power to single-handedly reject certified Electoral College votes, thereby overthrowing Constitutional democracy, can't be illegal because POTUS and VP talking about it makes it an official act.

THE sentence of the day: A Macronist incumbent in the Marseille region came in 3rd in her seat. She just dropped out to support the left. She said, about why she's maneuvering to block the far-right: "Defeats happen, but you can never recover from dishonor."

We didn't do any executing last time, because you know, you have to be gentle and nice and follow the stupid old rules that made us so weak, just a pathetic excuse for a country. But now the Supreme Court has freed the President up to really execute and this is going to be a great thing, just watch.

The executive branch. What a beautiful thing. It means you can execute things, did you know that? Not a lot of people know that. We're going to do a lot of executing [chants of "Let's Go Brandon" fill the hall]. Our founding fathers called it the executing branch for a reason!

I think it's cute that John Roberts doesn't think Trump will use threats of prosecuting Thomas and Alito for corruption in order to extract whatever future ruling he wants from the SCOTUS in the off chance that court every tries to constrain him in the future.

Apologies if this is "too soon," but it's only a matter of time before GOP messaging becomes "now that SCOTUS has said Presidents have immunity for their actions in office, can you really trust dangerous criminal leftists like Joe Biden to occupy that office?"

Homeless people can be arrested for sleeping, Presidents cannot be arrested for rampant graft and corruption done while in office. There is no clearer a summary of "conservative 'law and order'" than this.

On the subject of gaslighting, one of the current SCOTUS justices ruled for Bush in the 2000 Bush v. Gore case (Thomas) while an additional three (Roberts, Barrett, and Kavanaugh) worked on the Bush team for that case. Just calling balls and strikes, folks, balls and strikes.

In all seriousness tho, when this video came out in the mid-2000s I thought it was a brilliant satire on the authoritarian dimensions of the US's "patriotic" culture of founder worship. Little did I know SCOTUS would codify that authoritarianism into law 20 years later to please Donald F-ing Trump.

As a historian of early America, I can say confidently, based on this primary source, that George Washington ate his opponents brains, engaged in killing for fun, and once held a woman's hand in a jar of acid at a party...so obviously Trump must have legal immunity too. youtu.be/sbRom1Rz8OA?...

So would holding televised military tribunals to try Liz Cheney for treason be considered an "official act?" Asking for the person who held the #3 position in the GOP House leadership three years ago and is the daughter of a former Republican Vice President.

Here's a thread on that *relatively* less extreme, 100% Ultra-MAGA faction that's been under assault by a more extreme 100% Ultra-MAGA faction. The "establishment" faction believes that their antagonists inside the OR GOP are ackshually Democrat/CCP plants. Not kidding.

Being an expert businessman who tells other people what to do in the pursuit of making money is fine. Being an expert who makes rules to further the public good that in any way constrain the will of expert businessmen like Trump is communism.

The Oregon GOP is currently undergoing a factional battle in which the person who wrote that tweet is on the side that is *less* consiracy-addled, *more* reality-based, and *more* institutionalist. I agree with your first sentence. I genuinely do not know what to think about the rest of it, and I'm not sure anyone has enough information or foresight to know what the best course of action is. Either way it's a gamble, but I don't think Biden's chances are zero.

The biggest obstacle that stands in the way of this project to dismantle the administrative state is that when you actually ask citizens what they think about individual features of it, they usually like them and think they makes sense. Hence the need for so much blanket, anti-gov't propaganda.

Here's a link to the full conversation. It's depressing as hell, but still very much worth your time. What the right wing SCOTUS has been up to over the past few years is the latest iteration of a very long, anti-New-Deal-State project that's been at work since the 1930s. slate.com/podcasts/ami...
