It looks like Venezuela is preparing the ground for annexation of the region. This has been going on for years. The Essequibo region (called Guyana Essequiba by Venezuela) is three quarters of the territory of Guyana. Not very densely populated, but oil rich and covered by rainforest.

This evening I'll return to the place of my birth, the high-rise formerly known as Gliphoeven. The flat was the point of arrival for many postcolonial migrants from Suriname. I don't know why we also ended up there. Funny to go back there now as an expert of Suriname history, colonialism and racism.

Sad news. Re-reading this piece by @fatahblack.bsky.social & Jess Roitman because it typifies NZD so well: an encounter outside the Leiden library, where NZD was reading a Sranan-German dictionary, because "language is an avenue into the mental world of the past." www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

Reading her work, listening to her speak or just in a casual conversation - she always reminded me why I want to be a historian.
Truly a life to celebrate. Natalie Zemon Davis will be missed by many.

1/ So much to celebrate about the life of Natalie Zemon Davis - a long life well lived to the end & an extraordinary impact over decades that secures a long legacy.
She loomed large in my career from when I decided not to do a PhD with her a Princeton but follow my boyfriend to Hopkins instead:-)

I'm loving how Museum De Fundatie made space for connecting early modern and contemporary art. Very much worth a visit.
Upstairs there is a show of Ukrainian art, across the twentieth century to the present. Powerful works & space for connection & reflection.
