In the background is Myrdal's An American Dilemma. The thought is that this too is a text that ties perfectionism and progressivism together in responding to racial inequality, but it does so in the wrong way and damages the credibility of liberalism. 3/

Baldwin sought to discipline the excesses of liberalism, but he did not disconnect perfectionism from progressivism. I begin with that fateful discussion in 1963. You have Baldwin, Nathan Glazer, Sidney Hook, and Gunnar Myrdal at the table. 2/

I am working on this piece about James Baldwin's chastened liberalism. It is my attempt to engage, even if not directly, with Samuel Moyn's Liberalism Against Itself. It also draws from my book The Darkened Light of Faith: Race, Democracy, and Freedom in African American Political Thought 1/

A must-read: "These are the stakes: dueling visions for America — not Democratic or Republican, with parades and red, white, and blue balloons, but brutal fascism or flawed democracy."

The continuity raises important questions about Sharpton's religious and civic faith, those often subject to the violence on display in those scenes. How ought we to understand that faith? How ought we to understand the vision of democracy at work? How ought we to think about the demands of justice?

Last night I watched Loudmouth, a sympathetic portrait of Rev. Al Sharpton. I recommend it. It was good, but not because it provides an unvarnished take on Sharpton. It doesn't. But it does provide a montage of gripping scenes that capture the continuity of racism in America. 1/

I'm late to this. But we should also hold the media accountable for its attachment to sensationalism and thus a tendency to distort. In this environment, it is no wonder Biden struggles to break through. The bully pulpit does not mean what it once meant; it no longer functions as it once did.
