Mainstream news obliged to take seriously the idea that this national service bullshit is anything other than a gimmick to get the votes of people who hate the idea young people might be enjoying themselves

‘If you pay a landlord £1000 a month in rent, and he, after months of pleading, does a £50 bodge-job on your broken boiler, is he “investing” in the flat in an exciting way that’s great news for Britain?’

Editing. Never underestimate the stylistic toxicity of the word ‘never.’

Editing. You’re reading through, you find an unsatisfactory word, hit with relief on the right word, triumphantly make the change, find you’ve used the word two lines earlier and picked it up subconsciously. Every time.

Editing. ‘Catch his eye’ is an expression so deep in the language that it doesn’t count as cliché; it’s already figurative, so for me to try to freshen it up with ‘hook his eyes’ is stupid, pointless variation.

There isn’t a state of Palestine, though, is there? Isn’t that the problem? That Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza experience all the power of the Israeli state, but none of its justice?

Horrific. At least 16 people were killed and 73 wounded in a Russian missile attack and double-tap strike on the port city of Odesa today, according to Ukrainian officials. Several first responders are among the dead and injured.

Editing. Nothing wrong with the phrase '...but need he be so hostile?' except it's not common usage, it's novelese. Test: if when you translate it into common usage, like '...but did he need to be so hostile?' it sounds off, it probably shouldn't be there.

Editing. 'Cliché' versus 'original turn of phrase' seems a clear distinction, but most originality sounds peculiar and distracts from the sense it tries to convey. The trick is to find an original phrase that has never been used but seems to have been always there.

It might seem obvious that Nigel Farage will become Tory leader after the election, except that he might be too moderate, too sane, to lead the full-on conspiracist iteration of the Conservative Party now barrelling down the tracks towards us at five hundred lies an hour.

Last time I wrote about housebuilding I was struck by how the reams of enviro consultancy around a big development - paid for by the developer - has the teleology 'how this may proceed' rather than 'should we stop this.' Bats and badgers don't kill housebuilding: people kill housebuilding.

When I had a non-urgent NHS blood test yesterday, was dealt with speed and efficiency in a large modern clinic nearby with no queues and my GP got the results this morning, my assumption was they'd mistakenly forgotten to not build the clinic, not repair it, understaff it or close it.

Editing. Cut ‘any of’ and ‘really’ from a 27-word sentence. These insidious, phatic modifiers are the fungus of writing.
