Yoke of Stars arrived!!! 🥳🎊🎉 Theres no other world of fantasy quite like the Birdverse. Inimitably Jewish, queer, brimming with poetry and compassion, full of empathy and consideration. I dont feel seen so much as having found a home for my heart. So excited to read the newest addition 💖💖💖

Nice! I've read quite of the Birdverse stories on Beneath Ceaseless Skies and they are so good. I'll have to seek this one out as well. (Great cover by the way).

Posted it elsewhere, so I’d better post it here too: just under two weeks until my first-ever story is out! I’m so incredibly excited (and also extremely nervous? is this normal?? 🫣). Seeing my name on the @bcsmagazine.bsky.social website is just… unreal. What a dream!

SFF convention panel idea: Get a bunch of *former* editors/publishers of SFF magazines that were forced to shut down, and talk about what went wrong, what they learned, and what could be done better.

We're still at $188/month, just $12 shy of our peak level of funding back in fall of 2022. I still hate fundraising. And we can survive at this rate. So maybe I'll quit bothering you about this. Incredibly grateful to those of you who signed on even at $2 or $3/month. Thank you!

Support for Reckoning has flagged a bit since our 2022 fundraiser. We don't want to roll back payrates--we want to pay more, so more marginalized folks can have room to write about environmental justice and teach us how to be better! Please help if you can? reckoning.press/one-more-cal...

Live right now in BCS #408: "Blood and Desert Dreams" by Y.M. Pang. "My twenty-ninth kill. My heart twisted inside me, as if it were tired of pretending to be calm. I’m sorry, I thought, continuing down the hallway. Lord Farand hadn’t seemed like a bad man. He’d even stopped to help a stranger."

Time for my most explicitly queer stories for pride:
1: "Clever Jack, Heavy With Stories" in @bcsmagazine.bsky.social This was my first attempt at a story working out my tentatively felt queerness. It's a fairytale/folksong mashup with a sweet little adolescent friendship that might become more.

2: "Nemesis and the Sorcerer," also in
@bcsmagazine.bsky.social
(all but 1 are) The Sacred Band of Thebes on a dangerous mission to rescue/abduct a sorcerer from Sparta. Gods, wrestling, gay romance in the classical style. I really love this for centering the trust of lovers in an action plot.

3: "Uncounted Leaves of Ends of Camelot," in @bcsmagazine.bsky.social Meta-Arthuriana about pulling back from the brink, about looking for a better future, about caring so much what Merlin thinks of you. I didn't write it as a romance, but the vibes are extremely there.

4: "The Dying Lover of Nogorod" in @bcsmagazine.bsky.social I re-read A Wizard of Earthsea and thought, what if the wizards kissed? Then, what if they kissed the dragons? It's an homage to Le Guin, and a queer, poetic, mystical doomed love.

And it's always only our opinion. Our comments might not fit your vision for the story, or your vision as a writer, or the vision of other editors. Writers get the tough job of figuring out whether they do or don't. :)

_Both_ kinds of feedback are worth heeding, because I would like eventually to get something published in Beneath Ceaseless Skies. But I'd also like to get things published regardless of whether it's in BCS, so I do different things with the two types of feedback.

This is why, when I get a personal rejection from, for example, Beneath Ceaseless Skies, the first question I ask myself is: have they found a general writing flaw in this piece that I should fix (true for the most recent rejection) or are they letting me know about the type of thing they accept?
