Way more stressful, compromising my personal standards. While I like the people I work with and doctors I work for, the job weighs on me heavily. I want to make a partial living from art. I want to ship my paintings to people who will enjoy them, and spread widely my passion for space and science.

The truth is, I work a job that has nothing to do with my art or passions. For five years it was a challenging, stressful at times job, but one I cared about, as it directly impacted my community's healthcare. Last year we began merging with a larger company, and my job is now very... corporate.

I have a confession to make. I was afraid to be honest and say "Help support me as an artist". I grew up thinking asking for help was a sign of weakness, and it's still something I'm working on. So instead I said "help me make room on my walls", which while true, is not the real why of this.

The unique texture and starburst is a testament to the permanence of Ferris Wheel Press calligraphy ink—I spilled most of a bottle of Sweetbriar Rose across this painting while in progress, hence the title. 😂😭 (no really I cried. Then I mopped it up, let it dry, and changed my approach.)

I was halfway through a treadmill session at the gym when an older man, walking by in front of me, caught my eye and gave me a solemn thumbs-up. I smiled at him and he went on his way. Dawned on me after, I was wearing my cancer walk shirt, in what I jokingly call “you had to earn it” purple. Oh.

I went through a phase in my 20s and 30s where I resented much of this. (I was also married to, shall we say, a Very Bad Person.) But later (sans VBP) I realized how helpful those skills were to creating my work ethic, and how easily I became a successful entrepreneur as a result. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I was also a cashier at shows from 7th grade on, I stocked stores, wrote invoices, took payments. I counted stock and filled orders. I helped her photograph originals (the holding very still part helps when tilting a framed painting to avoid glare.) I built her first website. /2

My mom is a fine artist and portrait painter. from a young age I was a model for her, usually hands or draping of costume, or a head pose or whatnot. This gave me an ability to hold very very still, and to accurately tilt or move myself exactly as much as a photographer wants (they remark on it.) /1

This photo is called Earthrise. It’s one of the most famous pictures of Earth. It was taken by astronaut William Anders on December 24, 1968 as part of the Apollo 8. William Anders died today. He was 90 years old.

Originally I was to keep the graphic portion and my employee took the web portion. Then she changed the terms, even though she knew I needed the income. 🤷🏼‍♀️at this point it’s been five years and I’m gonna start up a new biz with my husband, and I doubt it’ll hold up if it went to court.
