This photo is called Earthrise. It’s one of the most famous pictures of Earth. It was taken by astronaut William Anders on December 24, 1968 as part of the Apollo 8. William Anders died today. He was 90 years old.
While not the first time Earth was photographed rising over the Moon, he captured it in a human way, giving life to a simple act that had been mechanically happening for billions of years. Goes to show it is the photographer, not the subject, who makes the art.
You’re burying the lede a little. He died at 90 flying his private plane that crashed into the water near the San Juan Islands. An absolutely legendary way to go for an absolutely legendary person.
I was 16 years old in 1968 and starting to love SF. Dutch papers featured this picture, but they turned it 90 degrees. However, I hung the paper in my sleeping room, but in the proper orientation. It has been there for many years until the ink faded completely. Thank you, William Anders!
Richard Nixon has that photo in his office for under 3 months before taking it down. He hated the Apollo program and canceled it the moment he could. There never was a popular backlash against it, instead it was the ego of one man. Intent on killing the dream of dead man he lost an election too.
