Tonight, I have a meeting for a committee I'm on that is reviewing our town by-laws and what, if anything, to change. It's not sexy, but it's important. This is how government works. I'm going to work with a diverse group of fellow citizens and try to make my town run a little more smoothly.

I get people who are frustrated, but at some point you need to work in the system we have and push change that way. It takes time and work beyond yelling on the internet.

Yes! More people should do it. If anything it helps you understand that changing the system is really fucking hard, but you can work within it effectively.

This has stopped being productive and you have made it clear you are not open to a reasonable discussion about the article I shared. I think it's worth 5 minutes of your time. Sorry you disagree.

Okay and will this be easier for or harder under a Trump? It's an easy question!

I ran for an elected position (albeit a small one!); I'm active in my community and local politics. I won't be lectured about taking action by people posting about revolution on a social media site.

There is something peaceful about watching a breakaway roll through the picturesque parts of France.

Do you think protesting will be easier or harder with Trump in power?

I simply do not understand why people who claim they want to reform our political system want to play on hard mode. All of this is easier under a Biden administration than a Trump authoritarian regime. We need to play in the system we have now, not a fantasy world beyond electoralism.

How do you do that under an authoritarian regime? Why do you want to play on hard mode?
Did you read the article? Because Josie explains this quite clearly!

There's nothing inherently more exciting about a breakaway, especially if they're rolling along at tempo.

Okay, so what's your plan? Whats that look like? How do you accomplish that under Trump?

Predictably the response to this has been, "Fuck you fascist, revolution only!"
And to those people I'd like to say two things:
Did you read the article?
What's your plan?
Josie wrote what I think is an empathetic piece about the difficult choices we face and people are ignoring it all.

Major publications think one big article outweighs the flood the zone Biden coverage. But that's not how people consume news anymore. A lot of people probably never read this, but they sure as hell saw the stream of Biden articles in their newsfeed.

I genuinely wonder sometimes if institutions like the NYT (and SCOTUS for that matter) realize that authoritarians can just march them out of their building and lock the doors.

Yeah! The station I worked at was New England Cable News (which was different than this station, which is now WHDH). But we actually did cover all of New England. It still exists but is a shell of its former self.

I have a friend who was an elite racewalker in the 80s (never made it to the Olympics) but it's fascinating to hear about the technique and speeds they can hit. He used to racewalk 8-minute miles. I can't run that fast!

This is actually even worse than it first appears because it ONLY mentions the “good” ideas, and they are written as though the author’s children are being held at gun point and they will die unless he finds three good things (caps below)
