Support your independent journalists, folks. Listen. There's a cohort of us who were trained (in some fashion, not always formally) in the job of reporting as it existed just before the rise of online news. Many are retired or have left the field, but the quality indies are among this group.

Yup! I used to work at Harvard doing social media and advised a lot of people on social media policy, particularly professors. I always had to remind them: You work at Harvard; what you say matters. And your posts CAN have legal, political, and career effects.

This is an old-school framing, but when I was in journalism school in the early 2000s and Facebook was just exploding, our professors always said, "Don't post anything you wouldn't want to see on the front page of the New York Times with your name attached to it."

Agreed! It doesn't make me less worried. It's why I wanted Biden to make a stronger statement. People need to know the stakes, and also, "The Supreme Court thinks Trump is above the law," is going to piss off people.

Decisions like this from the Supreme Court indicate to me that they realize their ideas are incredibly unpopular and that they know deep down they will lose via normal electoral means. So they have to grease the skids any way they can. And they'll take down anything they can along the way.

I really have lost my former tolerance for "we're doomed/fucked/it's all over/they've won" takes at this point, in that they're the most dangerous attitudes one could possibly have when confronted with a truly existential political threat (which we still DO have levers to address).
