We didn’t have to have a pandemic The initial low over dispersed R0, combined with the potency of airborne control measures, made this eliminabile at far lower cost, had proper public health messaging been there Instead we got bullshit from who and cdc

Good news: Mexico and Iceland have brand new women presidents and both are climate hawks! No surprise, since research consistently shows women leaders are more likely to support climate action, clean energy, and sustainability. More please!

I feel mid-career because I was pushing 38 when I landed TT job. I am full professor now, but still have about 15 yrs before retirement (so halfway through).

😱 I feel so bad for you both. Not an easy pivot, but I believe in the scientists at the centre of this finding a way forward ✊

So sorry this happened. I hope there’s a way forward. Maybe pivot to a BACI design (pre/post) if possible.

I don’t think it’s unpopular at all. I do wonder who is complaining though because wanting to keep stipends low so that you can have several students on your DG only perpetuates an exploitative system.

The funding landscape for environmental research in Canada is pretty limited, but for basic research-which is absolutely essential to any research ecosystem-tricouncil funding is the only game in town. Colleagues that do this vital fundamental research need to be supported and advocated for.

This is such a good thread to wrap your head around why many faculty are both so happy to see the increase in funding for scholarships but so uncertain about the actual impact for most grad student stipends

Yeah. Much of public health (clean air, clean water, herd immunity) is about collective action and public goods. This weird neolib stuff about managing your own risk and trusting markets makes no sense, and absolutely does not work

To the many who didn’t get awarded an NSERC DG, know that it doesn’t define you. Yeah, it hurts. My DG was rejected at first. I was told I had no business studying invasive species. This year I won a leadership award for my invasive Phrag research. Believe in your ideas. They’re good. 🧪🌎🇨🇦

"Even affluent people would enjoy a better quality of life if they lived in a country with a more equal distribution of wealth, similar to a Scandinavian nation." We really need to reduce inequality. Universal basic income plus a mix of taxes is how. Everyone would benefit.

This post really resonates as a mid-career prof. Not fitting in a box made it difficult early in my career to secure a TT job, yet being multi-field (if not multidisciplinary) has only helped me sustain a research career.

I have told students I am not anti-AI, but I see it as a tool to be used after they have developed a solid knowledgebase in their field, as well as critical thinking and evaluation skills. AI is best used when the user is in the driver's seat, rather than the other way around.

Having students find, read, synthesize and evaluate info. rather than letting AI do it is likely more beneficial for deeper understanding of concepts and frameworks than getting AI to do it.

Perhaps another analogy is that note-taking by hand has been shown to be more effective in learning new material than typing notes on a laptop. Both are approaches to transcribing info., but one appears to be more beneficial for learning than the other.
