Being cute, mostly 😁 But their parents are judged on knowledge of family history, sewing skills, use of traditional materials, and more. Lots of babies had parkas and atiqluks that matched their parents this year

My cousin's kid won the Louvie Harris Baby Contest! That is 6 wins, I think, 4 or 5 in Kotzebue and at least one for WEIO. Way to go Shylena Lie!

Oh, hey, turns out we are still here. As evidenced by me, the person who posted this, and the tens of thousands of Inupiaq who are also still here. Turns out we aren't pretending, that this is who we are. Your ignorance is loud.

You can scroll by. You didn't have to comment on Inupiaq traditions that are thousands of years old, that were almost lost due to forced assimilation, and show how ignorant you are. That was quite the choice.

Yes I ended my talk with a poetry reading. I send this poem to my parents every 4th of July. Here it is in full if you've never read it: poets.org/poem/let-ame...

I also hung out with a woman who knows our region's plants incredibly well, Lorrie Ward. I guarantee that the words are spelled wrong. My dad stores these in seal oil. I only tried the Masu, which my friend Kathy Ward (master dall maker) describes having a parsnip taste.

4th of July in Kotzebue: Baby contest, Miss Arctic Circle, & Arctic Circle contests started last night. Baby contest is named after my Aunt Louvie, master sewer and my dad's hunting partner until she passed in 2007/8. My cousin Shyena Lie is in the first baby pic, then representations of diff styles

Science friends … this requires some extra effort to get going, but you could try some of these on Bsky:
- host an AMA
- share a paper of a colleague and have a convo with them publicly
- repost minority authors on days of significance (or 365d/p/y!)
- the ol’ Follow Friday thing
- use hashtags & 🧪

Yeah, there are a LOT of things companies won't ship to Alaska, including batteries, anything that may have oil, perfumes, anything that is potentially volatile. But there are also companies that won't ship to Alaska and don't say that on their site until you go to check out. Very frustrating.

Your honor, with all due respect, but as long as I know how to love, I know I'll stay alive. I've got my life to live and I've got all my love to give. And I'll survive, I will survive

Begging Duck Duck Go, Google, and Amazon to let shoppers sort by ability to ship to rural Alaska. Just spent 45 minutes trying to find automatic air fresheners that would ship to Alaska for a reasonable cost before giving up. I'll see what's in town tomorrow.

Again, Black people are an exception here, as basically anyone who stayed in the Jim Crow South has a living memory of living under what amounted to fascism, including the “always walking on eggshells/lack of social trust/long periods of boring endurance/randomized terrifying violence”

We just wrapped up an excellent round of field work full of beautiful scenery and beautiful data in Prince William Sound, Alaska - mapping submarine landslides to investigate earthquake and tsunami hazards. This region saw major impacts in the 1964 M9.2 Great Alaska Earthquake. #USGS ⚒️🧪

reminder that there was a time when they were literally selling radium soft drinks in the USA that were so toxic that the biggest fan of the brand had to be buried in a lead coffin because of how much radiation poisoning he got from them and this death led to the FDA regulations that exist now
