It is incredibly infuriating that all the complaining about cancel culture paved a path to this, where state officials are saying that they are allowed to censor any faculty speech that contradicts them. www.insidehighered.com/news/faculty...
Don, talking about DeSantis, look a this whistleblower suit filled by a former top law enforcement official against DeSantis. Looks like DeSantis was weaponizing law enforcement (government), to further his campaign. This should be a big story. www.politico.com/newsletters/...

No, professors aren't government spokepersons. And political criticism is the classic example of protected free speech.
Why are DeSantis's lackeys so uniformly stupid?
The cancel culture panic was always a demand for power and privilege to be protected from criticism or challenge. Censorship was always the only way to achieve it.
Conservatives love "cancel culture", it's a cornerstone of their cult, they were mad because they thought the Good People (white, racist, cishet conservatives) were getting canceled by the Wrong People (everyone else)
Itโs all economic immolation in order to maintain or extend conservative cultural dominance, which does not work out. These guys suck at running things and the people of Florida pay the price.
I find this whole โcancel cultureโ argument hypocritical, since itโs being raised by people who never ask for, much less respect, other points of view. Growing up in Kentucky, I saw right wing people โcancelโ others many times. They just didnโt call it that.
Florida is simply no longer part of the United States. We should start treating them accordingly along with Texas. Want federal dollars to fix up the joint after a hurricane or something? Restore rights, first, and the weโll see how feel about it.
Important to note that the state has already been censoring professors for years in Florida. Now, they just want to formalize the process. My field, public policy and administration, would be impossible to teach under these conditions. donmoynihan.substack.com/p/an-assault...
