Roe WAS the compromise. First trimester: woman's wishes prevail. Third trimester: needs of fetus prevail. In between: states set standards.

One of the reasons that many Dems saying "codify Roe" feels lackluster.

Not to mention that Roe didn't prescribe any obligation to actually supply abortion services, just guaranteed their legality. In contrast to most other developed democracies, where abortion during the legal period is obliged to be provided for free or a purely nominal fee, at a convenient location.

This is the tactic, over and over again. The right fight's tooth and nail against what's reasonable so that you end up with a shitty state of affairs, and then they fight *that* like it wasn't their idea. It's inhumane, obviously, but it's also so very cynical.

"Third trimester: needs of fetus prevail" That's not accurate; a 7 months pregnant woman who would die if the pregnancy continues still had a choice.

True, and I recall reading in Peter Irons’ book about the History of the Supreme Court that RBG was furious with Blackmon about Roe because she thought she’d be able to do better.

The point of the compromise was actually about the safety of abortion compared to childbirth. 1st trimester abortions have always been much safer than childbirth, third trimester abortions were (at the time of the decision) less safe than childbirth but now are about as safe.
