There has been a lot of work behind the scenes with the prime ministers science advisor (and likely more im not aware of). There have also been many calls from within the science sector that I believe are being listened to. Public consultation would likely also not be nuanced given the polarisation

The technology has been more than properly explored and field trials are not possible in NZ. I’d argue we need more regulations around IP and benefit sharing as well as profiteering. But all of that is separate from whether or not GE is safe or useful (it is both)

A lot of issues former issues with GE are resolved with the likes of CRISPR, and other issues are more those of corporate ethics than problems of the tech. Changing our current regulations is a nuanced convo and idk if I trust Nats to get it right but it is timely

It is not currently realistically possible to develop GE things in NZ. And if we’re to keep making food in the context of climate change, conventional breeding techniques are too slow. And technologies are far more precise and controlled than 30 years ago
