Another case where finding the guy a job in academia probably could have averted a lot of unpleasantness.

Also—and I am definitely speaking as a layman—how does the Court’s declaration of Presidential “immunity” square with the Constitution setting forth the possibility of impeachment for “high crimes and misdemeanours”? How can Presidential acts be “crimes” if official acts are immune?

“Official Act” is now part of the Trump lexicon along with “Locker room Talk,” “No Collusion,” and “Fake News”—phrases meant to dismiss and paper over very real, unethical, and scandalous behaviour.

This right here was the whole strategy for Trump’s lawyers. It’s like a shell game. You wanna try me for fomenting an insurrection? Well you can’t because it’s now an Official Act! Illegally withholding aid to extort Ukraine? Official Act!

At what point does the “separation of powers” doctrine kick in to separate the SCOTUS from some of their egregious amount of power and reallocate it to the other branches?

Maybe the current president can make reforming the court by presidential fiat an “official act” and put this new legal doctrine to the test.

The Court has saved Trump, kneecapped Smith, and set up the conditions for an elective monarchy.

There are plenty of practical things that could be done to make the court less partisan and to help restore confidence. The problem is that it takes making it a partisan election issue to make those reforms a reality, because it’s difficult to envision any kind of bipartisan good faith from the GOP.

Further signs of an eroding democratic system. Yet this could also present a real opportunity for a president to reform the court.

It’s real. And he is showing his age, like any of us would. Trump is also old but we know the electorate grades him on an enormous curve. Democrats ignore this at their peril.

Also, can’t help but laugh at the naivety with which he talks about “curriculum”. Who’s perspective? And on which Testament? Of course nobody has ever disagreed over the Bible before…..

As a PhD in the field of biblical studies, I am always in favor of offering elective courses on the Bible and the history of its interpretation to encourage biblical and religious literacy. But that's not what this is. They're trying to turn public schools into taxpayer funded religious schools.

Remember this the next time someone says something silly like when Nikki Haley said America is not a racist country. Reggie Jackson isn’t talking ancient history. This is living memory.

Nope. I’m just a person who reads a lot of US history and who grew up with guns before gun culture got all weird. Enjoy your day.

Penn & Teller should stick pulling rabbits out of hats. The meaning of the text is clear. It can even be reordered to make the meaning more plain. The right of the people to keep and bear arms wasn't to be infringed because the well regulated militia was necessary for the defense of the free state.

This is what I don’t get. The text clearly says it’s a provision for the security of the “state,” not freewheeling paranoiacs who rationalize any egregious use of guns as self defense and the necessary cost of protecting “muh second amendment.”

Oh my God, I didn't realize this is literally the exact story I told in ONE NATION UNDER GOD. The Fraternal Order of Eagles was instrumental in spreading these Ten Commandments monuments across America in the 1950s ... as part of a promotional tour with the Cecil B. DeMille epic.

Notice how MAGA conspiracy theories can never be proven false. When new info comes in that cuts against them -- such as Hunter being prosecuted by Biden's DOJ -- the theory is just enlarged. So now the officials who prosecuted Hunter are part of a cabal protecting the Bidens.

It’s just crazy to think that three justices on the US Supreme Court were appointed by a guy who is a convicted felon.

I’ve been incredulous at the MAGA retcon of Jan 6. Then I read Robert Chernow’s bio of US Grant and was reminded that Americans were retconning the Civil War, giving up Reconstruction and black civil rights just a few years after the war. Malign forces win when folks tire of fighting for good.

It’s hilarious Republicans spent the week arguing Alito’s flags are irrelevant and don’t mean anything and then the second a jury finds Trump guilty they all fly flags meaning exactly what they said Alito’s didn’t

Had a funny “Red Flag” experience yesterday. Walked into a shop located in the little town to where we recently moved in SC to find at the store’s entrance a door mat with a “Don’t Tread On Me” flag emblazoned on it. I did, in fact, tread on it as did every single other person who shops there.

Anyway the most recent former President of the United States has been found guilty of felonies and now there’s a substantial chance people are going to die because his followers are freaks and the so-called “mainstream” GOP will just shrug and blame woke or something.

Stoller's claim that the Southern shift to the GOP was caused by anti-trust and not civil rights is like watching a child with a hammer who thinks everything is a nail.
