There may be issues with our fire service and the reliance on volunteers, although the need profile is different. But also the Fire Emergency NZ is a national agency and fully funded by government. No private fire engine sponsorships.

I will never understand why we run a vital emergency service as some outsourced semi-charity?! Imagine seeing Facebook ads from the police wanting to fundraise for police stations. Nationalise the fucking ambulances!

You joke, but Iceland actually has that. Although sort of the other way around. It's to prevent people accidentally starting relationships with close relatives.

It's almost criminal how much this headline overstates the video. Honestly, imagine showing this video to literally any American and telling them this is what constitutes "armed" police "storming" something here.

Honestly seems a bit shit that Auckland Council, in the form of Eke Panuku, is ruling out rent reductions for Wynyard Quarter eateries despite closing the bridge that brings most of the foot traffic in.

Cloud seeding is a thing that exists to an extent and is used in specific circumstances for very clear purposes (and often without success). The claim of chemtrails is usually that thousands of airliners are spraying mysterious chemicals over the world for a variety of reasons.

Newshub posted this story on Twitter. The replies went roughly where you might expect... It's such a classic conspiracy theory "gotcha" - that one thing with a passing similarity exists means that dramatic and unevidenced claims of a vast conspiracy are real.

Although I think this has not been well communicated by the PM and Government. And any potential impact on rents from that last stage of its implementation would have been nullified by simply stopping it at the point it is currently, rather than returning to 100% deductibility.

Turns out I'm a little mistaken on this - the removal of interest deductibility as legislated by the prior Labour Government was a staggered implementation and the coming 2024/2025 tax year was the last step. So it is possible that the policy could still have increased rents.

Sure, not your primary purpose, and the rule says it doesn't have to be the primary reason. But as I say the whole conversation around property ownership is about investment and increasing value. No one is buying and holding forever.

"It's an investment" "This is my retirement nest egg" All we ever talk about with the property market in general is increasing capital value. And that capital value is functionally imaginary unless it's sold. Everyone is intending to sell, no matter what! That's the point.

While I'm at it, I find the rules around taxing property sales pretty laughable. If you buy a property "intending" to sell it, then you have to pay tax. But that's literally the underlying reason, in NZ property ethos, for buying ANY property!

I wish media would call him on that point specifically. They are doing quite a good job of keeping a critical view on his claims around this generally, but I haven't yet seen him called on that specific claim. He's talking about a past event and a current change that won't impact the past.

Luxon keeps saying that rents have gone up because of the added costs imposed by Labour's removal of interest deductibility. And that may be true - but that change happened, and the rents went up already. They're not going up again. Returning deductibility won't lower them.

This is an interesting theory from the other platform. Not sure about the specifics, but this sort of automated photo enhancement could explain a lot of this. Which is, ironically, a sort of AI. But not the Generative AI that many have speculated about.

FWIW that Princess Kate photo just looks like some very standard photo merging (a few exposures mixed together to get best expressions from everyone) and normal kids being weirdos stuff. It's not AI. Just normal (albeit slightly sloppy) family portrait editing.
