Cultural talk and typing. And singing. Biographer of Stephen Sondheim Tristram Hawkshaw in The Archers. Somewhat gay.

I cannot recommend this Prom strongly enough. 31 extraordinary numbers from Mancini, Jones, Esquivel, Laurie Johnson and beyond that you never imagined you’d ever hear live. Unmissable. Including this… youtu.be/zbT2fIGyAOo?...

In the midst of research for writing a slew of programme notes for the BBC Proms I find this. It’s by Quincy Jones and it’ll be in the seriously fabulous concert by the BBC Concert Orchestra of music by Henry Mancini and beyond on 2 Sept. Cannot wait to hear it live. youtu.be/_SkcF-yjiZw?...

Boring? Not heard that recording so that could well be the case but I saw her Elisabetta in Don Carlos live at the Royal Opera and her singing was staggeringly exciting.

The great thing about someone labelling the exquisitely balanced, blissful Charade - the best comedy thriller Hitchcock never made - as “pretentious” is that it signals one need never read the writer again.

Sliced bread first went on sale 96 years ago today and — here’s the fun bit — was promoted as being the greatest thing since WRAPPED bread.

Irrespective of the covers, they’re magnificent. An initial slow burn - I recall being slightly doubtful for the first 50 pages as there’s so much set up-of a large cast - but then became addicted and devoured them. Superb social history and VERY acute observation esp. on adolescence into adulthood.

Can you have too much of a good thing? A glowing Justine Mitchell leads a strong cast in Kendall Feaver's fourth-wave feminism and #MeToo  campus drama at The Almeida. But has it found its right form? variety.com/2024/legit/r...

I know she wasn’t the worst of them (plenty of contenders for that title) but when it comes to people being grifters wholly unsuited their departments, it was hard to beat the blatant disregard for her office of Thérèse Coffey at Food, Environment & Rural Affairs… and before that, health.

“Small, scrappy theatres” suffer the most and are under the greatest pressure as have no access to finance beyond box office and that’s low in small theatres. The West End long ago stopped being the home of exciting work, the exceptions being transfers from the NT etc eg Dear England which was VG.

There is fine stuff being written and occasionally produced but theatre (the arts in general) is cash-strapped, costs have rocketed and everyone from theatres to audiences are understandably risk-averse. Known quantities are easier to sell. Sigh.

Using MOVIE as an acronym, recommend 5 films M - The Manchurian Candidate (Angela Lansbury in excelsis) O - Overboard (wildly underrated Goldie Hawn comedy) V - Victim (Dirk Bogarde, amazing) I - It’s Always Fair Weather (from the Singin’ in the Rain team) E - Edward Scissorhands (Dianne Wiest)

Seriously, fellow British peeps, go and vote on the 4th. Don't take it for granted that the Labour landslide victory is a done deal and your vote doesn't matter. Brexit was such a catastrofuck because half the people who had a right to vote on it couldn't be arsed because OBVIOUSLY it was done deal.

“Liking” your reply would clearly be wrong. But it was indeed wonderful. I have seen many Sargent shows over the years. This had many of the usual suspects (barring the magnificent Darley Boit family portrait in Boston) but also several i’d never seen from private collections.
