Thank you! Flight attendants are usually great. I've never had trouble with on-flight staff.

Thank you, both! I managed to find accessibility services after security, so they'll take me to my gate in a cart or wheelchair. I was supposed to have a wheelchair through security, but I couldn't find them and three people told me incorrect directions so I gave up. 😅

Exactly. Security shouldn't cause pain. It doesn't need to! Thankfully it wasn't significant pain, but that plus the 9-hour flight I have ahead of me... it all adds up, unfortunately. I'm very early so I have time to rest. Hopefully that's enough.

I did it because I didn't feel I had a choice, but it was painful. There must be an alternative to checking someone's shoes that doesn't require a big step or putting all weight solely on a bad leg.

The security person saw me with the cane and had already patted and swabbed my knee brace, then she just pointed to this thing and told me to step a leg up. Didn't ask me if I could or offer alternatives, even when I said "this is going to be really bad for my leg."

There's irony in the fact that my knee brace, which I use because that knee causes me pain, set off security at the airport such that I had to go through extra screening that required me to lift that leg and then stand solely on that leg. Both of which cause pain, which is the reason for the brace.

My cane folds up and fits in my backpack, so I can use it when I need to get up as well! Good call on meds. I usually take as needed, but preventative is probably better for this. I always forget how easy it is to dehydrate, so that's a good tip! Thanks for your thoughts.

I already booked wheelchair service to reduce walking before and after the flight, and I'm in an aisle seat with my injured leg on the aisle side. I can get up to walk and stretch, but walking is also bad on my knee so I'm not sure if that's worse.

Q for my #Disabled and #ChronicPain friends, particularly those with knee injuries/pain. How do you handle flying? Any tips for keeping my knee happy on a long flight? My last 7-hour flight had me in unbearable, tearful pain at hour 5.5, and tomorrow's flight is 8h45m.

I love the rain, genuinely, but it does make spring allergies worse. Hopefully my allergy pill kicks in and I can breathe by the time I have to give my paper. 😅

For those sticking around #SHARP2024 tomorrow, I'll be presenting at 9am. My paper is about my project training an OCR model to read embossed braille. There are lots of fun complications involved in this project that I'm excited to share with you!

I love that #SHARP2024 gave one of its two conference keynotes to a graduate student researcher—for one, it gets fresher perspectives wider attention at the event & hopefully provokes new ideas for all but two, it usefully disrupts the typical conference hierarchies—more conferences should do this

#SHARP2024, we’re at the second keynote with Swara Shukla, Serialised Reading and Digital Marginalia in the Wattpad Book Publishing Ecosystem. I’m gonna attempt phone based live sleeting bc I didn’t bring my laptop!

Hey #SHARP2024 folks. I brought my braille slates with me and haven't had much chance to use them. If you want a little card with your name or anything else embossed on it, or just want to know what braille feels like, come find me Thursday or Friday! Happy to braille for you.

This is my first in-person conference since my injury, so I'm still figuring out how to navigate these spaces while managing my pain and trying to limit the burden on other people to change things just for me. I'm thankful to the #SHARP2024 and U of Reading folks for everything they've done.

Another kind #SHARP stranger had offered to drive me themself, since they had a car, even though they weren't attending either of the sessions I was.

The University of Reading venue staff have all been wonderful as well. Yesterday, a kind #SHARP stranger called to arrange for security to pick me up from the MERL to drive me back to the main campus so I wouldn't have to miss a session because they were only 15 minutes apart.

I'm very thankful for the #SHARP2024 organizers for their care and attention regarding accessibility. There was an issue with a lift suddenly being broken today—nobody's fault!—and now they're making sure I can attend the sessions I want to without having to climb stairs.

I definitely can't liveskeet. I wouldn't be very good at it. But I try to post other conference-relates things or just use the hashtag to let people know I'm there and to please come talk to me if they see me. I was hoping to use it to follow lots more SHARP folks this week though!

Looking at the #SHARP2024 tag, I think we don't have a lot of SHARPists here on BlueSky? Shall we start recruiting to build our community here?

I'm the exact same! Pretty much only my nb or trans friends use they for me regularly. I also use they exclusively at conferences to help normalize it for other nb folks who don't use femme/masc pronouns at all.

It appears that my "universal" power adapter that I bought at the airport in Canada is not so universal. So I guess I now have a mission for tomorrow in Reading!

For folks staying in campus accommodations, the taxi from Reading Station to residence cost me £12 this afternoon. Tell them you're going to the university car park 2! Also the food at the pub attached to the station is delicious if you need to stop for a bite first. #SHARP2024

Heathrow accessibility services were also incredible! I'm very thankful for accessibility workers. There's no way I'd be able to walk around and find my way in these huge airports without it.

Recently, I was peer reviewing a paper, and it cited one of my papers. Except... it wasn't anything I had written. The title sounds like something I'd write. It included coauthors I work with, and was in a journal I've published in. But it wasn't real. AI is not good for science.

Shout out to accessibility services at Copenhagen airport. I've never received such thorough and kind support. I was really early, so they even arranged to help me to a restaurant and pick me back up when I'm done to take me to my gate.

I genuinely don't think most people realize that access to a bathroom is foundational to being able to participate in public life. Like, if you didn't know you'd be able to go to the bathroom when you needed to, how far would you be willing/able to go from home?

I also forgot to mention that I ended up taking a taxi from the airport to my accommodations instead of transit as I had planned, because I was in too much pain to figure out the local transit system and how to get to where I needed to go. So that was expensive. 😬
