i'd much rather see rigorous enforcement paired with reasonable sentencing of course, but as long as we have onerous sentencing writ large i don't think white collar crime should be a special exemption

Think this is too complex for 300-character snippets, but I've never been convinced by the politics of "let's stay harsh on X until we fix things with Y." Feel like that is just a way to keep X AND Y high, bc that's how the politics log-roll. I think we keep arguing "X AND Y are BOTH too high."

And these punishments aren't about safety for the general population. It's about making life more uncomfortable or miserable for those who committed the crimes. Hitting rich people with fines doesn't seem to do shit as we've seen with our rapist ex President.
