(he/him) I am a designer and programmer, interested in interactivity, digital art, and computer-enabled experiences. If you're working on something weird, fun, thoughtful, or rebellious, I'd like to help you make that thing happen!

Yeah, sounds like we're on the same page then, wondering why it's mostly empty...

I've said this to you before a few times: Glitch is amazing, I've used it for silly art projects, Discord bots, teaching introductory programming classes, one-off tools for colleagues, weird prototyping and exploratory work. It's inspired a lot of my current thoughts about the web and web culture

Semi-related, do you have any resources or opinions on the domain name aspect of getting one's "own piece of internet real estate"? I'm a technical person and I happily pay my registrar for my domains, and I'd like to see non-technical people have the same kind of access to "internet real estate".

"Friendship with climate grief is over. Climate revenge is my friend now." — A TTRPG friend when I described this game to her. One of my taglines for the game is: "As long as we can still wield a knife, we must make the worldkillers bleed. Basically, it's about murdering capitalism and fascism...

That said, if anyone happens to be a military aviation nerd and would like to rant to me about some random facts, hit me up! I'm intersted in learning more about the big-picture strategy and tactics of air combat, interesting fighter jet technology, and and anything else on the subject!

I'm in that research phase of a project where suddenly my Youtube recommendations dramatically pivot...

Anyway, I'm prototyping a video game version of my WIP TTRPG "Wolfpack": spaceshipsin.space/wolfpack/

My Youtube recs are now a bunch of aviation nerds ranting about fighter jet generations...

I really hope they can see through my fumbling around with the shitty IDE and give me a call anyway. Give me a whiteboard interview or let me stream my screen to use, I promise I'm better than this test implies...

Like maybe I'm just bad at solving problems, but I do pretty well on things like CodinGame and CodeWars, which is essentially the same thing, except there's less stress, and I can use my own IDE.

Does anyone have any advice for dealing with technical tests on platforms like coderpad? (Quiz questions followed by some timed code writing, using an in-browser IDE) I just failed two tests, mostly due to time pressure stress, made worse by their IDE having crappy auto-complete.

This post reminded me of a speculative fiction thread I wrote on my now erased Twitter.

I grabbed it from my archives and posted it to my blog, for posterity: spaceshipsin.space/blog/hungry-...

can you define the density of what you're measuring so that you get an accurate "ml" measurement when you're not weighing water?

It's absurd that Discord still doesn't have a "view replies to this message" feature. You go to a "Support Discord", you want to be nice and avoid asking a common question, search it, and find a few people asking the question you have, and are left to scoll through the mess, hoping there's a reply

I really think that decentralisation/federation is the best approach here. It spreads the load, it allows for radical inclusion as well as rigorous moderation, it maps naturally to sub-communities, and it makes it possible to scale without having to resort to absurd economic models

I totally agree!

I ran a Mastodon instance using the ideas and advice from Darius Kazemi's runyourown.social article.
It was just a dozen people, but with federation we were connected to millions more.

There are huge issues with Mastodon, but the emotional drain of handling a community is not one

I use OVH, they have 3.50€/mo VPS options with 20GB of storage, 100Mbps bandwidth, and unlimited data transfers. I'd like to see municipalities provide free hosting or other socialised hosting options, even 3.50€/mo can be a pain for poorer people, but hosting a website is very accessible today

But there was something exciting about the web when it was mostly small websites linking to each other. Maybe it really was something special, or maybe it was just new.

That said, I don't know exactly when it was, it definitely ended when Facebook became as big as it did, but maybe it was over well before that. It wasn't all good either, the web was a wild place, and it wasn't difficult to accidentally stumble on some brutal gore or other horrible stuff.

I remember a sense of playful discovery. Stumbling on a cool website like www.realultimatepower.net

It doesn't hit at all the same as a cool YouTube channel. A YouTube channel is a part of a large, structured platform, whereas a website is someone's weird little corner of the internet.

One of the pages has a little part at the bottom that is torn and folded back.

We think it's a defect, but it's very hard to be sure...

I'm in France, and our laws around free speech are different here, but it seems strange to me that calling in bomb threats would be protected under free speech. Wouldn't it be more akin to a death threat, which I don't believe is protected in the USA?

Also, I strongly believe in giving "less descriptive" names to large systems. Larger systems often end up doing more than originally intended, in your case, maybe the save system also ends up handling configuration. If you'd called it "SaveManager", it would now be a misnomer.

More of a graphics term than a programming term, but I like "mipmap". Although maybe it's because I like mipmaps themselves and enjoy using them in unconventional ways to achieve certain effects.

One cool thing is how they all use Common Crawl, which has the entirety of my blog in it, and the AI companies are adamant both (1) my blog is a trivial component hence not bothering to ask or to pay and (2) it's absolutely essential everything be in it, including my blog, or the AI won't work. 🤷‍♂️

I was given some crypto as part of an "airdrop" on keybase. When I found out, I just sold it and gave it to someone on Twitter who was struggling to make rent. The way I see it, some cryptocurrency nerd helped pay someone else's rent...

Yeah, our system works like this too. We can also edit our expected income to set the deductions. Useful when you know your income is going to change significantly, so the end of year adjustments aren't as drastic.

A few years ago, the government introduced oups.gouv.fr, a website where you can declare errors in your administrative stuff and get it fixed, usually with no penalty or fine.
I had contract work that I hadn't declared properly and got sorted in a couple weeks, only having to pay the tax difference

Here in France, you get a pre-filled form, which for most people is sufficient. If you have special tax breaks (from charitable donations for example), or undeclared income (side hustles up to a certain amount, work for a foreign company, etc...), you fill in the gaps

FTX had TV adverts with beloved celebrities, that buys a lot of trust. Even I was starting to wonder if I was just blinded by cynicism sometimes, seeing crypto dot com, FTX, CoinBase and others enjoy an unquestioned spotlight everywhere that wasn't my terminally online filter bubble

You know, some stories can exist in the medium they exist in and never be turned into a franchise. It's okay not to have movie versions of everything.
