2nd July 1863. Battle of Gettysburg. For perhaps the only time in the entire war the Confederates seem to be winning.
Dan Sickles, commander III Corps, is ordered hold on Cemetery Ridge. For reasons unknown he advances. Broken, his men begin to flee.
This is the moment on which the war depends /1
Thank you. My great x6 grandfather signed the Declaration of Independence. I have 13 members of my family buried in Arlington. Every generation has served. I hope our voters do the right thing in November and honor the sacrifices of those like the 1st Minnesota.
In case anyone doesn't understand the details, Gen. Sickles basically marched ahead of everybody else. This formed a huge bulge in the Federal line with soldier strung out in thin lines. Sickles was not known for his martial prowess and had no good reason.
Even so, his soldiers fought like lions.
Hi. My name is Steven Westlake. My great great grandfather Reuben Westlake was with Company C of the 1st Minnesota. Thank you for your description. I'll just add that the following day Company C captured a Confederate battle flag during Pickett's Charge. It's still at the Minn Historical Society.
Sickles is an interesting man. First man in the USA acquitted for murder because of temporary insanity after killing his wife’s lover. In 1859. You could wonder why they gave him command of an Army Corps. Probably helped his defense lawyer Stanton became Minister of War in Lincolns cabinet…
Sickles’ action places his men far out in front of the rest of Meade’s army. Into that salient, smash the Confederate forces of General James Longstreet, one of Lee’s finest commanders.
Sickles’ men are broken, the General himself seriously wounded, and they begin to flee. /2
