It's the same bullshit reason he's skated on everything since "Grab 'em by the pussy!" Fear of a boomerang effect that will activate his Herrenvolk. Everyone with a voice or platform needs to call him the piece of shit that he is, including white liberals to the MAGAts in their lives.

Yes, but it gives the impression that Trump is more normal than he actually is, and may lead to "great, I'm just going to sip my Chardonnay and despair" rather than light a fire under peoples' ass to do whatever it takes this NOT happen

The audience of the Times is more than just the two candidates. If the Paper of Record is calling for Biden to drop out and not Trump, it validates the latter and discredits the former with centrists, potential disaffected Rs, and the Ds we need to be donating and rallying the troops.

I think not seeing it is a framing issue, wherein NYT is imagined as centrally engaged in an evenhanded effort to distribute information, rather than self-awarely undertaking any project to exert influence.
