I would encourage you to read some of the more detailed history of what happens when e.g. Nazis take over. Most people don't know just how bad things can get. We're talking "piles of corpses being bulldozed into pits" as cleanup, here, not joking, no hyperbole, there's video footage.

People weren't making money off the spread of polio, CFCs were easily replaceable in most usages, and sulfur emissions were a matter of adding filters -- so nothing that undercut a whole gigantic industry with world-dominating economic power. I feel like these are not fair comparisons.

There's useful technologies that have harmful application (cf. screwdriver, can be used to stab someone to death), and technologies that do not have meaningful _non-harmful_ ones. Generative AI seems to pretty much be falling into that latter camp.

honestly? mostly because the patriarchy is harmful to us all. in his autobiography, Frederick Douglass describes watching slave ownership corrupt an otherwise decent person into an increasingly awful one, and posits that power imbalances harm everyone, albeit unequally i think that’s why men are.
