we’re supposed to be the helpers, AND: you should still start by looking for the helpers… and then ask how you can pitch in. there are very few areas to help where someone isn’t helping already, and our efforts accomplish more when we work together. look for the helpers so you can join them.

additionally, if you oppose Hamas, probably the best solution is to pressure israel to stop enacting apartheid, and build a unified governance model where everyone is allowed to both actively participate, and enjoy the same civil rights. which is what the majority of Palestinians are asking for.

and before you “but what about Hamas?!!?” at me: yes, Hamas is also bad, and i don’t think that a far right religious sect that has overwhelmingly been propped up by Israel and the US is a good long-term political leader for Gaza… … which is largely irrelevant until the genocide stops.

as a Jewish person in the US: - yes, antisemitism is happening, and is bad - yes, i actually believe that antisemitism hurts palestinian people too, especially given that palestinian Jews exist - i don’t think my comfort is a priority when the israeli state is mass murdering children in my name

i think there are some lovely people who choose to use mastodon. i choose not to use mastodon because there is a subset of mastodon users who i simply do not want to engage with. i get frustrated when that subset shows up here and brings the attitude i’m here to avoid.

i work in security engineering leadership, and am really fortunate to be both established in my career, and have a really robust network. security has been hit hard by layoffs too, but having warm intros to hiring teams is a game changer

tbh, i am VERY fortunate to have opportunities, and to be able to walk away from scenarios that don’t feel right for me. it’s definitely brutal out there, but i would be remiss to not acknowledge that i have it better than many.

it’s wild to me that you think you are the only person with this experience. it also does not change the fact that your choices are: - stick out for masking - cause harm to other people i empathize, and empathy is not a free pass for harmful behavior.

no, i absolutely do get your point. as someone who has not stopped taking precautions, but is living with long covid because other people did, i have very limited patience for “but nobody else is doing it.” choosing not to wear a mask harms people. is it worth harming people to fit in?

we have known for almost 5 years now that asymptomatic transmission happens. is it harder to wear a mask, or to grapple with the fact that you may kill or disable someone else because you decided not to do something as easy as masking?

“stare at it” is actually a poor choice of words. beauty can be sound or taste or touch or smell, too. it can be petrichor, or a song that makes you weep without knowing why. it can be biting into a fresh strawberry. it can be petting a cat with fur warmed by the sun. beauty is everywhere.
