Just wanted to do my own sarcastic quip about the idiotic "plans" being floated around and that the news is reporting.

Boy, I can't think of a more blatant way to tell voters that their votes don't matter and that everything is all spectacle. Perfect!

Hell, this might be a little nit pick compared to what you're saying, but even finding a home that can be wheelchair accessible, and has a bathroom on the ground floor just cuts out a lot of the market. It's not just finding a good healthcare network that's challenging, but even a decent home too!

One of the best baseball movies of that era. I wonder if anyone's done a deep dive as to way so much of the 80s & 90s had baseball films.

Kind of like how I always felt that Labor wound itself up the political woods for years following Brexit: If you want to be an effective opposition party, you have to present yourself with policies that are IN OPPOSITION TO WHOM YOU'RE RUNNING AGAINST!

Okay, fair, but I always somehow sensed that he had something of a massive ego as well in some capacity. Like, because he blew the whistle on the NSA, he's the "American Intelligence Expert" on everything. (I only guess though, I don't pay much attention to him if I can).

Part of me always wondered: did he let the "prestige" of a somewhat mediocre Oliver Stone film about him go to his head?

I can't remember in my entire lifetime any of the major media sources criticizing candidates or incumbents on virtues of what they're doing. "Read my lips" and "Potato" got more coverage than the fact Bush I was a fucking tire fire. This is just buffoonery. This is a self-important circus.

It ties back w/ what I remember one of those reporters or editors said a few days ago where they don't report Trump's lies or past behavior much anymore because "his voters don't care," but they'll report Dems' foibles because "Dem voters care." Just completely giving up at their jobs and it shows.

I know the phrase: " Having a child means agreeing to have your heart walk outside your body for the rest of your life," and I think it very much applies that being a parent. Taking a piece of your own heart out, and now learning to raise it right, protect it, yet grow it to be own its own.

I don't have kids myself, but I think just the fact that you now have a created life to take care of. One that's new to world, completely vulnerable, but also curious, and that you brought them into being, re-orients your way of thinking on a base level.

Hell, the fact that there was only ONE such kind of trial after the war (involving the commandant Henry Wirz of Andersonville Prison in Georgia for his horrific conditions and leadership there - seriously, look them up) and not many folks TO THIS DAY know of it, just compounds on our great failures.

I don't know where I heard it from, but I remember someone saying that "treating politics/movements as a series of EVENTS," rather than you know, an actual movement involving often tedious, but necessary matters of logistics/planning/etc., will cause lots of people to generally move on from boredom.

Wanna ask - What reforms here do you think are more likely to pass in the next democratic administration? My ranking has it likely as: 1. New Voting Rights Act 2. Gerrymandering 3. Filibuster 4. DC and PR Statehood (SHOULD apply to all of the territories Imo) 5. Court Reform 6. Electoral College

For me, it's become like smoking (I remember an old Twitter thread by Arthur Chu about it, neurodiversity, and tobacco; hope he's doing alright). Especially these last few months of news, scrolling is like compulsively huffing two or three cigarettes in like 5 minutes, and distracting me from work.

It's something I asked myself this when folks started talking about wanting Biden to drop out and appoint someone else, like say his veep: Can't he resign (or keel over) AFTER he gets reelected? Like, let's be like the GOP and focus on getting the bag first, and then worry about what to do w it.

So now you're stuck with either going for one of the premier national carriers with a more diverse fleet (United, American, Delta) who will definitely charge of the wazoo for even an economy ticket, or an ultra-lost carrier that uses Airbus planes almost exclusively . . . like Spirit.🤬

And so if you're watching the news and thinking "Well, I just won't fly a 737 then!" Good Luck! That cuts out Southwest Airlines, the LARGEST LOW COST CARRIER IN THE US AND ALL THEIR FLIGHTS (they ONLY use 737s because it's cheaper to train and repair on just one kind of plane to fly).

This is especially fucked for the airline industry because in the past there were a whole bunch of commercial aircraft manufacturers (Hell, Lockheed Martin was one). Now there's only three left in the whole world . . . Three!- Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer. Corporate Consolidation baby!

Granted, haha, but also, imo part of that's due to the fact that since more folks today get news from social media, and since Elon Musk has given for the far right go-ahead to spread on Twitter, they don't need The Federalist. Nazi's don't need their alleyway shops, they're now on Walmart shelves.

Sure, "The End is coming" . . . but life ain't a traditional play, but a series of scenes that continue on and on and on till you're dead. And yeah, that makes it seem like everything before is pointless, but the truth is more "Always be moving, always be thinking, always be planning, and doing."

If the worst does come, and progress gets set back for years, decades, generations, ALL WHILE an increasingly extreme climates grows ever deadly . . . can we at least star forming plans of what to do in the undergrounds? Build dual societies in the meantime to emerge? Form and create contingencies?

I sometimes fear a lot more people are suicidal than ever before, and don't know how to contend with those feelings/impulses/over enveloping outlooks that colors now how they view the future . . . and I'm one of those who struggle with it. No step-by-step plans for the future, just vague ideas.

Deleted a reply thread, because I was getting a bit too personal + rambling w/ myself to try to map it out onto a grander scale. Just . . . I feel like that biggest invention we've made ourselves is the concept of "THE END," forgetting that it's supposed to be used for fiction and maybe biographies.

In a way, I view it as kind of a Modernist (using the literary term here) Fairytale (they don't have to be "happy') for adults. The moral here being: "The effects of the things that we do to children, under the claim that 'It's best for them,' will FAR outlive any attempts to understand them."

I don't know if it's Freudian here (I'm not too knowledgeable about that kind of analysis), but you could see this film as a story in how childhood trauma can shape a person. The watch that shape grow, morph, and change into the ever hungry, bitter, broken adult.

Yeah, I think for him (I'm approaching this as a Theatre Arts BA Graduate), his character's "super objective" is: to rectify the damage his family had done to him. Gain that comfort back that was sold. Only by the end, he doesn't even realize that on his deathbed, the damage had already been done.

Ironic given how the movies ends with him feeling like he was happiest as a child ("Rosebud"), the time when he had the least amount of control with his parents essentially selling him off, both of whom he probably views as common and disappointing. Though maybe that's where the paradox was born. 🤔

I think Willa Cather has become one of my all-time favorite authors, with My Ántonia being easily one of my top 10, maybe top 5 novels (granted I read more plays than straight up books, but still). It really feels great uncovering a classic for yourself for the first time, whether books, films, etc.

"Everyone always complains about the few Bad Apples! Why don't they talk about the Good Cops who actually Do Their Job?" Because this is what Good Cops who Do Their Job wind up facing. Because in this system, they're "not doing their expected job." Their "Job" is what the "Bad Apples" are doing.

In that case, I think The Martian might fit that category. I've always considered it to be the sci-fi cousin of Apollo 13.

I've been on a Willa Cather kick since discovering her work over a year ago so . . . Luxury RV trip to Red Cloud, Nebraska where she grew up so I can explore her hometown and all the places within that state that influenced and inspired her writings. With homestyle cuisine to dine on the whole time!

I think the first part of the film, where it feels like a sort of coming-of-age movie that happens to be set in WWII era Japan helps make the actual nuking of Hiroshima even more stark in its disturbance. It really felt like that world went from normal to hellscape within moments so jarringly.

Perhaps one of the few bipartisan consensus issues left this country. Virtually everyone fucking hates HOAs and it's always a question that someone looking for a home asks that might determine the outcome of a purchase: "Does this neighborhood have an HOA? If not, then where do I sign!?"

This is what I was worried what Desantis' War on Disney would lead to. It wasn't just going after them specifically, but also warning any other corporation showing the barest limit of supporting LGBT people. They only need to make us a "third rail" again, which isolates & leaves us more vulnerable.

I feel like down the road (no pun intended), there's gonna have to be a combined effort to tackle the amount of power that dealerships have in lobbying state governments. Which is tough because they account for over ~30% of a state's total sales tax revenue. But this is unsustainable going forward.

I remember something similar to an episode of Community where Abed makes a documentary. He says that while the documentary filmmaker is idealized as to having no impact on the story told, THEY have the greatest impact of all cuz they get todecide whether or not they want to tell the story and how.
