Perhaps the most surprising thing about the Marvel Rom Omnibuses might be that Evan Dorkin shows up in the reprinted letter columns twice. (Once with a cartoon that might be his first printed artwork in a comic?)

The plot of Prez #3 is that right-wing extremists are so upset about gun control legislation that they attack the capitol. Again, this comic is 51 years old.

From Prez #2, a senator complains that limiting gun ownership threatens “the safety of all Americans.” This comic is 51 years old.

I listen to this on a regular basis, still. (And his work with Delakota, too, around the same time.) It's so good.

For bonus comic culture points, the original release had a Jamie Hewlett illustration on the cover that suggests a possible Ronald Searle career that wasn't.

It's been a quarter of a century since this little piece of pop perfection came out, noodling around with a dictaphone rap made by the musician's little brother about crushing on one of his teachers in high school. www.youtube.com/watch?v=HR0Q...

Mantlo was a great pulp writer in a way that just doesn't exist anymore, really: they weren't all winners, but that didn't matter -- he'd be off next issue doing something else anyway. Strong similarities to the 2000 AD crowd way back when.

Mantlo is very very much up there with Claremont for best writer Marvel had in the 1980s for me. Micronauts, Hulk, and Rom are all masterclasses of a very particular style of writing. (And things like Cloak and Dagger and his Swords of the Swashbucklers are fun as outliers.)

There's definitely similarities to how Giffen plotted. Superhero comics need more writers who are more afraid of getting bored than they are of blowing everything up every few issues to see what happens.

I've been working my way through the Rom Omnibus Vol. 2 in the last few days, and between this and re-reading the Mantlo/Buscema Hulk run in its entirety last year, I have to say: Mantlo's inability to settle for too long makes him such a wonderful superhero comics writer.

This is your reminder to ask for help, even when you don't feel you absolutely need it. Yesterday a friend came over and helped me clean my depression mess. No major crisis. I was just sad and overwhelmed and having a friend there made it easier.

If it's got the Batman issues as well, it's the closest thing to the complete reading experience. (Submit was one of the one-shot tie-ins, and almost all of them are entirely peripheral.)

DCUI's "In This Series" listings can be very very dubious, however. If the physical edition has the issues, then the digital edition will.

I think both Submit (which is... pretty throwaway) and Superman Beyond #s 1-2 -- both pretty essential, given how the story ends -- are in the New Edition.

I think that's Morrison's preferred approach; that the collapse of reality basically made the details soft, and so contradictions appear throughout. It's really going far to avoid saying, "I wish they'd read my comic and made it all fit," but Grant is too gracious.

Countdown is not good, and is very long. I warn you. (Final Crisis is... something you may or may not dig? Get the collection that has the extra pages, it's a smoother read.)

The three series bluntly don't go together. They can each be enjoyed (or... not, in Countdown's case? It's such a strange series, and I say that as someone who's read it a number of times) separately, but as one complete story, you can't really do it.

I like Final Crisis a bunch, even if it's somewhat messy. But it feels far more ambitious and contemporary in a manner that feels true to Kirby than the projects surrounding it.

It's worth pointing out that Countdown to Final Crisis and Death of the New Gods both pretty extensively misunderstand and contradict Final Crisis, especially with regards to the Fourth World stuff. But to be fair, Countdown and DotNG contradict each other pretty strongly, too.

That was the OTHER exorcist movie last year. Which spawned an entirely different franchise. We can only hope to see The Exorcist vs. The Pope's Exorcist in theaters before the end of the decade.
