I think it’s partly a domestic labor protection; workers afraid of being undercut, regardless of the merits of that

Feudalism never stopped being the ideal of those who think they'd be kings. That kings had any responsibilities never crosses their minds, of course; nor that they are not *actually* likely to be one.
