Holy shit -- why don't we talk about this more?? (I mean, maybe we do but I live in CA and we almost never have thunderstorms, so that could be the reason why I am not teaching my kids this thing I learned growing up in MN.)

You can process in silence. In an actual diary. In a group chat with people who know and get you. There is no way for strangers to enforce a change in your heart about art that moves you. For better or worse. But you don't have to throw your unmovedness in the faces of people who are hurt.

This is also why it's so important to live your life not online all the time. There's a certain amount of performance to personality in online social spaces where one may feel compelled to love or loathe or opine or Take Positions because that's how one Engages a platform. But what if you...didn't?

When polls are saying Biden is up five in Michigan but New York is a battleground and Trump has 40% of the African American vote but Biden has 60% of the elderly, idk man polls are fucked some sort of way. Maybe Biden loses a historic landslide or he’s up by 5 but they’re fucked some sort of way

Oh, totally. Which was my refrain after every pass I got from editors who couldn't handle it. Unfortunately, kids aren't buying the PBs, gatekeepers are, so we have to make sure they pick this one up.

Yep. Many editors wouldn't take it on because they couldn't handle the truth of it. But we need gatekeepers to pick it up so kids can learn how to deal with their anxiety and know they aren't alone if these drills scare them.

Some kids even tried to hold their breaths during drills to be extra silent which is why the title of my book was originally WHEN BREATHING IS TOO LOUD. But the marketing team decided the title was too scary.

If kids have older siblings, they learn even younger what it's about. And they tell each other. My kid knew in 1st grade why they did it. A girl in his class got a nosebleed but didn't tell the teacher because they were supposed to be quiet. That's the event that made me write the book.

Same here. There's so much evidence out there that the drills traumatize and don't even work in actual school shooting situations. One school shooter used knowledge of the drill to commit the shooting.

When my oldest was in middle school two years ago, he was told to use his iPad to fight back if confronted by a shooter. He told me, "I will fight even if I get shot in the face." He was 12.

YUP. I hate adding new streamers, too. I fell for Ghost on a Delta flight this summer, got season 1 from the library for the fam and am now trying to figure out how we cram all of s2 and s3 in a *7-day* free period that Paramount+ offers.

I fully agree. And yeah, for me gun violence has also been my primary political focus. I wrote this particular mss back in 2019 when I was highly motivated. It got a lot of visceral reactions from editors who passed. Then COVID happened and we pulled it from submission. Resubbed and sold in 2022.

I had a teacher friend send me photos of her classroom in lockdown. The kids were all hiding in their cubbies with their backpacks and jackets in front of them so they could barely be seen.

I’m feeling fine. My symptoms have been so minimal — it’s more the isolation from the family and the fact that my elderly parents are visiting in a few days. I will likely test negative on my 10th day which will be Thurs. But thank you for asking.
