I don’t think this was a case of “us” overreacting, or the media. It was every single person who watched the debate or saw clips afterward. The whole country saw it, the whole country can’t unsee it. It would be great if we had time to see where things shake out long term. But we don’t.

The problem is 1) that he was already down by a significant margin, and 2) the debate and its aftermath have destroyed confidence in his ability to do what he’d need to do to make a comeback. We were in really bad shape before the debate; now it’s our last chance to right the ship.
