Folks, I may have a PhD in history-including US politics history-but the last several years I’ve been working in public health as a science writer. One of my areas of focus is Aging, including Alzheimer’s and related dementias (AD/RD).
I find the discourse around Biden really troubling.

I imagine so, I’m grateful for your bringing some of that perspective to this madness.

Man, to do a curbside consult on POTUS. What a thing.
You are completely correct in how you’re characterizing this interaction, to be absolutely clear.

The one thing I’ll say here is that I’m pretty confident that if there’s one thing Doc Cannard doesn’t give a shit about at this phase in his career, it’s from randos review bombing him lol

Or the other *tons of people* White House medical is charged with taking care of.
Truly a mystery.

Doc Cannard has worked with the White House since 2012 as part of their general neurology clinic. The White House medical unit is responsible for *tons* of patients, not just the president.
Good lord this is embarrassing.

That would throw me too.

I’d be really impressed if an 81 year old survived a ten car pile up tbh. Really speaks to their resilience.

If I ever go back and do another grad degree I’d love to focus on the impact of climate change on domestic emergency response.
It’s not great, and made all the worse by the strong threads of climate denialism present in first responder organizations.

A thing most people don’t consider!
Helicopter range and lift are heavily limited by weight and when the air is hot and thin that gets a lot harder.

Which is to say, if asked if I had concerns about the two presidential candidates regarding a condition I specialized in, I may respond “I have concerns about both because of their risk factors! Here is what to look for.”
Framed as a public health/education thing than a diagnosis.

No worries, I just kept finding issues with the article as I read through it.
The more I think about it, the less I think that Kelvin was out of line and more that the reporter misrepresented what he was trying to communicate tbh.

And if I remember correctly O’Connor is one of around ten physicians on the White House staff at any given time. It’s not like he is the only practitioner there.
I’m also not sure what his being a doctor of osteopathy has to do with anything. Plenty of DOs are neurologists too.

This makes me really disappointed in Kelvin that he’d make comments like this to a reporter without actually assessing a patient himself.
The article also misstates O’Connor’s specialty. He is not a combat medicine specialist, he did his training in family med and worked in executive medicine.

You deserve better.

After a series of strokes last year, the subject of this profile, a friend, was left with bad amnesia. He called last week to tell me that someone read the piece to him during his recovery, and it helped him begin to remember his life and identity.
Probably the best feedback I've ever received.

Yep, here is what I think they were referencing. This language is very similar to what's in the Lancet letter.

I wondered about that, I'll take a look. Thanks!
I may reach out to the editors and have them correct it if so. They're usually pretty good about that.

It is 100% true that there are far more deaths than official tallies, I am not denying that by a long shot. More that I am not sure where in the source (linked below) they got the method of just multiplying the official count by four.

I've seen this Lancet letter estimating the number of dead in Gaza at ~ 186000 from direct and indirect causes posted here and elsewhere, but the citation they use to back up their method of multiplying the confirmed dead (37396) doesn't seem to support that?
Anyone see something I'm not?

By voting for the “Biden Harris” ticket you are… explicitly voting for Kamala Harris to take over in that circumstance?
Her name is right there, man.

Update - they came out perfectly! The spalted areas are totally solid now, and once I clean up some of the excess epoxy you won’t even be able to tell. I also filled and stabilized a large crack on one of the boards that I think came out nicely.

I’ve had luck with soaking these spalted areas with epoxy previously, so I decided to try again!
The trick is to brush on the epoxy and allow it to soak into the pores of the affected wood. This should take about a day to cure, and I’ll post an update on how it turned out then!

Small update - when I milled out the walnut lumber I found a few spots with spalting/rot in them.
The thing is though, it looks really cool! So I want to preserve the spalted patterns it while reinforcing the overall strength of the wood.

It should! It’s dehumanizing and cruel.
No one likes a memento mori, but the response to one shouldn’t be to write off other human beings.
