Explosive reporting in Le Monde confirms what was apparent all week: Macron resisted the emergence of anti-far-right front after round 1. His PM, Attal, forced it as a fait accompli, & pressured for drop outs to block RN. Even then, Macron made some phone calls to undercut it.

Yeah, it's very funny how bad copilot is when it's not writing JS, Java or Python. Basically, anything it hasn't scraped off of stack overflow. These are all extremely limited tools, bounded by the quality and quantity of the data they've stolen... and not capable of going beyond that.

This is basically it. Trump is both an expression and a driver of the right-wing psyche. He's their power fantasy and they can live vicariously through his greatest crimes.

I can tolerate Riley and Robin because their scholarship is in fact good, but Moyn, SJ and the rest are just mid-level dorks. Hell, I'll read Brenner, just because he's interesting, even if he's pretty wrong about a bunch of stuff.

You can fine tune LLMs on very narrow, throughly human-vetted datasets, in which case they just become good search engines for that knowledge domain. You can't fine-tune a model trained on the average of an ocean of garbage data (that it will then reconsume).

Unfortunately, the more likely outcome is that the Labour majority will turn into a hugely squandered opportunity that people will struggle to explain 10 years down the line. There's not going to be a Manchin/Sinema keystone personage there either.

Eh... this sort of glosses over liberalism's many attempts to accommodate fascism and preference for working with fascists (or outright installing them) over the left, both in the pre-war and post-war period.

It forecloses a potential avenue of justice (and a fairly landmark one, had it landed). Weird to point to previous acts of Presidential injustice, show that they were not punished, and therefore conclude that a SCOTUS ruling that prevents an ongoing attempt to punish the former POTUS is meaningless!

The argument isnt that you should appease racists, more that you're leaving out several decades of economic decline and center left rightward shift (e.g. the SPDs/Labour's free market turn in the 90s) from your analysis. Racism seems to become more nationally aspirational in that context everywhere.

The right routinely delivers on it's horrible, vague promises. I think there's other factors here too, but politics of "national rejuvenation" are also much easier to sell because everything can be construed as national rejuvenation (including doing things that are against national self interest).

If people were willing to vote for a center left party that promptly betrayed them, I dont know if they're inclined to go further left. Unless you're being rapidly radicalized by... something... I dont think that's how ideology works for most people.

I think you're leaving out a pretty big chunk of economic analysis; the EUs economic decline interlaced with terrible austerity politics that were supported by progressive left parties even when they were voted in on a platform of combatting same. That's going to cause some distrust and alienation!

As both CIC and God Emperor, Dark Brandon could keep going and make sure there was no institution left standing with that power. I dont expect him to, but if he did cross the Rubicon, he would have to keep going to prevent just such an issue.

reflecting on the immunity decision a bit, what the Court seems to be saying is that every element of the executive branch is at the President’s disposal, no matter what he wants to use it for. his motives don’t matter. the office is a weapon to be wielded however he sees fit.

That really doesnt matter anymore. He can do what he wants and the SCOTUS will do what it wants, and that's pretty much it. Whinging that he's skirting the rules, when the rules literally bend around him like light around a black hole, is just very silly.

A Macronist who came in 3rd place in southern France says he is dropping out to block the far-right.
Results here: RN 36%, left 29%, Macronist 25%.
What's interesting...: He said as he dropped out that he got calls to *not* do so, including from Macron.

Lots of "objective" social science exists at the intersection of data and interpretation. Its completely fine to position a (good, useful) version of The Law inside that framework.

I think you can objectively reason about The Law, but in the sense that you can objectively reason about history or any other human-scale subject... namely by introducing the concepts of context and value. What's the purpose of The Law? Does it build the society we value and want? Etc.

So many loser-brained comments that think that you can rules-lawyer your way out of a situation that you were never rules-lawyered into to begin with. It's also silly to think that a Democratically-held Executive would continue to be allowed to become a thorn in the side of the right-wing project.

To be perfectly fair, the way the Tories actually executed Brexit (no backup plans, endless fantasies about American Trade Deals™, no idea how it would affect supply chains or passports or anything) is substantially responsible for that... but a softer Brexit probably would have also slowed growth.

I do think there were a range of Lexit positions, ranging from implicitly anti-immigration to pro-immigration-but-on-our-own-terms (equivalent to customs union), and all of them failed to reckon with the actual impetus behind Brexit - insane racism that you could not ride to social-democratic ends.
