I'm pretty sure this isn't correct, is it? One doesn't use the term "the blacks" anymore, right? And isn't Black supposed to be capitalized in all these sentences, not just the one? This was published by a pretty major #horrorlit publisher in '24, so I feel like the editor should have caught this.

If they are writing in-character and colloquially, usage might be inconsistent and out of step with current usage, to better reflect a particular character and setting. Still, should probably have at least been standardized by the editor.
