The stunning native wildflower, Vipers-bugloss, rapidly colonising an abandoned industrial zone. Nature often doesn't need our help, it just needs us to stop actively destroying it.

Wrapped around an oak in the woods, a Gordian knot of ivy stems, in turn carpeted in mosses + polypody fern. This is an Irish rainforest. 🌎

In the depths of winter, a taste of things shortly to come: wood anemone on the rainforest floor. Spring's release of wildflowers is always such a joy. Soon. 🌏

Here's an insight into our work on our reserves and our native tree nurseries, where we are expanding ancient woodlands for the first time in centuries and preserving rare native gene pools through propagating local trees.

There are *many* disadvantages to fencing against overgrazing. For eg: stakes can rot very quickly in the Irish climate, compromising the whole perimeter. But with all our natural predators missing, it's either that, heavy culling, or allow habitat to be eaten into oblivion. 🌎

So sad and angry to see these last ancient oaks in parts of Killarney NP, unable to regenerate for at least the last half century due to invasive sika deer and goats. If it continues, when the trees die, the most important of Ireland's last rainforests will die with them. 🌍

The pine marten is Ireland's rarest (and one of our prettiest) native mammals, and was almost lost to extinction through hunting for fur, poisoning, and destruction of their forest habitat. www.ciaraioch.com/artprints/p/...

A few of our volunteers, collecting tree seed in the ancient St. John's Wood on the banks of the River Shannon. All will be grown nearby and will become part of a new woodland just metres away.

An autumnal scene from our Bevans Wood reserve in the Wicklow Mountains. Beneath those still waters are freshwater mussels, crayfish and otters; Bevans Wood packs a lot into a small space!

It's been a stunningly beautiful morning to spend a few hours in our Rinnangan nature reserve and explore its ancient sunken lanes, now reclaimed by the forest.
