1. Ireland was once c. 80% rich, native forest 2. It's now c. 1% 3. Most of that 1% is dying due to overgrazing 4. The invasive alien species most responsible IME are either protected (sika deer), or there's a campaign to make them so (feral goats) I *really* despair at times. π

Lynx serve many crucial ecological roles, yet are solitary, secretive animals only a little bigger than a labrador dog. They very rarely attack livestock or pets, and *never* people. We need to be talking about their reintroduction to Ireland. π

Bringing lynx home to Ireland wouldn't just help revive ailing ecosystems.
Sharing the land again with this exquisite cat would add a spark of frisson to our own lives, expanding our imaginative universe into new realms.
Let's do this. #Rewilding π

Wild forest by the banks of Lough Derg, Co. Tipperary.
In an almost thoroughly domesticated, tamed landscape, these places are precious repositories of nature, and sanctuaries for the soul.
We need WAY more of them.

Now, an old stone wall is just bare rock. But with sheep gone, wild native trees are sprouting all around. As they close in, raising humidity levels, a great diversity of mosses, ferns, etc, will race to colonise. Nothing beats witnessing a rainforest ecosystem form. π

How a natural forest tends to grow: lower (ie wetter + more sheltered) ground reverts first, with trees colonising rocky raised areas more slowly + patchily.
But the point is *nature* is taking charge again, at its own speed.

In Ireland, if it's non-native + invasive, it'll likely be mass introduced (sitka, pheasants, sheep...), maybe even get legal protection (sika deer, feral goats...). But if it's a missing native keystone species, people will find 1,000 reasons to keep it out. π
