Bonkers. Still lab scale, but a team has created an anode free, solid state, sodium battery. It's basically just sodium and an aluminum (some powdered) current collector. Huge theoretical potential for abundance, fast charging, high density.

1. Ireland was once c. 80% rich, native forest 2. It's now c. 1% 3. Most of that 1% is dying due to overgrazing 4. The invasive alien species most responsible IME are either protected (sika deer), or there's a campaign to make them so (feral goats) I *really* despair at times. 🌎

Bringing lynx home to Ireland wouldn't just help revive ailing ecosystems.

Sharing the land again with this exquisite cat would add a spark of frisson to our own lives, expanding our imaginative universe into new realms.

Let's do this. #Rewilding 🌍

In this #EnROADS simulation we took action across the entire system and managed to keep temperatures just below 2ºC

Whichever way we sliced this, breaching 1.5ºC was unavoidable. (1.65ºC by 2040)

This is the world we must prepare for.

Scenario here en-roads.climateinteractive.org/scenario.htm...

Carbon footprints among different income deciles in Germany are pretty similar.... until you look at transport. Once again, a very strong argument for a frequent fliers tax.

This Bloomberg article notes that this large ongoing methane leak in Thailand is visible from space and likely due to improperly combusting flares. Also, "Methane releases at the platform aren’t the result of leaks and the facility remains safe for operations." Just business as usual.

We are poised to make the same mistakes with carbon capture storage that we made with fracking. Did you know they are passing laws in states to exempt oil and gas companies from future liability for injected CO2?

The ever brilliant Simon Clark has put together a U.K. election special looking at what Labour, Conservatives, Lib Dems, Reform UK, and other major political parties say about climate policy. He provides a handy rating for each party and recommendations for which party to vote for.

Wrapped around an oak in the woods, a Gordian knot of ivy stems, in turn carpeted in mosses + polypody fern. This is an Irish rainforest. 🌎

Now, an old stone wall is just bare rock. But with sheep gone, wild native trees are sprouting all around. As they close in, raising humidity levels, a great diversity of mosses, ferns, etc, will race to colonise. Nothing beats witnessing a rainforest ecosystem form. 🌎

Well done Dorset Council (UK)! Buying a dairy farm for reforesting or rewilding is the way to go! It will cut down on water pollution, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and other climate impacts, biodiversity loss, water use - & improve human health!

It’s sort of like this 1️⃣ Where do I want to go? 2️⃣ Is the trip time reasonable? 3️⃣ Is there an option when I want to go? 4️⃣ Is there a direct train I can take? I’m aware that *for some types of travellers* direct connections matter more than others. But it’s just one of many […]

A tiny, rare fragment of wild native habitat around a rushing river at Puleen, Beara. These places exist only because they're inaccessible to sheep + other grazers.

I've written a lot about abandoned oil and gas wells and how the industry is setting up to walk away from its responsibility to pay to clean up that mess. We would be in the dark about a lot of this without the excellent work from CarbonTracker. www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDms...

Two years ago I did a lot of research into options for decarbonizing aviation No one was talking seriously about batteries then for anything other than electric taxis and maybe blimps. Things change fast. For the record, I'm pro-blimp. And anti sustainable aviation fuel, which is a scam.

Methane is devastating our climate, but cutting it would be a huge (easy) win.

So why are emissions still going up?! 📈

I finally got around to watching this video Adam made about methane, which is more-or-less my day job lately. I'd say "ten out of ten. no notes", but I sent him one small note. I'm an obstreperous bugger. That said, this is the best lay explainer on methane I've seen. You should watch it. 👇

The Government of Denmark had just agreed to a tax on livestock emissions. €40 in 2030, rising to €100 in 2035. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen says: "We will be the first country in the world with a CO2 tax on agriculture.” Looks like New Zealand is now distinctly behind in that race.
