I've accepted I'll have to settle for three walls and a pass through, but damn I want the kitchen in its own room where it belongs.

depends! we had a white (factory finish) kitchen with white marble-look quartz and it was wasn’t too much to keep clean, tho it didn’t hide dirt. wiped up easily
our current kitchen has flat white laminate counters, now, and that shit is awful. no pattern means a single speck of salt SCREAMS at you

Huh? I would think the surface mattered more: if it's Corian or porcelain or foil gloss, nothing will ever show after wiping down.

I hate the White Kitchen trend with the strength of a THOUSAND SUNS. Also the everything steel/metal. That shit SCRATCHES. Parents have a metal sink and learned the hard way. (Though I do love that sink cause it's a deeeeeep sink)
